Joe Moore Political Campaign Pep-rally included.
That's how the event last night should've been billed as. After starting 12 minutes late due to Joe's lacky running the sound system -- Joe spent about 10 minutes introducing his staff to the audience half full of delusional political supporters.
Then the comedy blame game by the commander was introduced by the 49th ward puppet master, Joe Moore.
Let's start with the warm-up joke. The commander said "crime is down 27% last month." Joe Moore nodded his head up and down. The tin-foil hat folks in the crowd followed Joe's lead, and bobbed their heads up and down too.
More funny stuff:
"Crime is like the chicken and the egg story," the commander said. The community is "the egg."
"How do you fix a parking ticket? With a checkbook...."
"If a tree falls in the forest, no one hears it...."
"If something was amiss, I can smell it out..."
"Even if I had the best of the best, I'd still only be able to do 1/3 of what's needed on Howard Street.... I need 1/3 of the publics, and 1/3 of the communities support"....

Blognotes: Not only is he a bad comedian, he's a terrible liar. If he didn't care about stats, why'd he have to blabber on and on about crime being down 27%?
There were about 100 people in attendance. One patron, David Fagus, came prepared, with a super-big gulp and bag of Dorito's Chips from 7/Eleven. You could hear him munching the chips and slurping on the big-gulp 3 rows away. This is a rotten example of healthy eating from the CEO of one of our tax payer funded County Health Centers. When I asked him about this poor choice of nutrient content he was putting in his system, he said it was "lunch and dinner. "
The Chicago News-Star was there covering the comedy show. They should have a article filed by Thursday. I'll add more serious stuff here as the day goes on. Like an officer being stripped of his badge and gun for inappropriate police misconduct.
The commander said he was teaming with DevCorp to battle crime. I asked him if DevCorp was a new police force? He looked as if he was a deer caught in the headlights of an on-coming semi-truck. He didn't have a clue what DevCorp actually does.
He didn't have a clue what the CAPS beat boundaries are. He tried to add a beat to an area that wasn't even part of the area he was taking about. What does he think, we're all dumb and stupid or something?

Anyhow, I only alloted myself one hour for this lame ass comedy routine. I had to rush home to watch Jack Bauer save the world in 24. 24 hours that is. I already was 12 minutes behind schedule because of Joe Moore starting 12 minutes late. He really should invest in another sound man.

My friend/neighbor who I attended the meeting with also found it rude that they were unprepared and started the meeting late (my watch showed 10 minutes). Bad form.
Craig- you're right about the guy being a comedian but I'm willing to give him a chance. Unlike the last one, he has a plan and has already put some wheels in motion. I agree with you that he contradicted himself on caring or not caring about stats and priorities (i.e. Howard gets priority based on crime and call stats vs. "I don't care about stats" and something like "prioritizing one thing prioritizes nothing").
There were also a few comedians in the crowd, some more amusing than others.
I'm looking forward to learning more about the bad cop stripped of his duty and if he's the one the lady in the audience is afraid of.
Since the new commander took charge, it appears to me that public drinking is down around the Metra Station and the famous El Mexicano Liquors. I see the police addresses these two areas whereas in the past they sat in their cars and watched. I think he is making a difference.
I also attended the meeting and found the comment from the audience that a homeless shelter will solve crime a joke. I lived in the 46th ward and from my experience homeless shelters attract homeless from all over the region and the community is stuck dealing with the street activity while they are out hanging around and drinking all day.
I was at the meeting and couldn't get over how most of the time was spent complaining about "racist" police officers rather than the very real drug/gang/murder problems going on in our ward...unreal. I can't get over the fact that so many people are more concerned about the cops rather than the gangs!

Really? Someone actually said this? So all of those guys shooting at night, selling drugs on the corner and all of those kids fighting everyday at Sullivan school are homeless? Wow, that's enlightening. I never would have guessed.
That comment came from the divorced hottie who hangs with Westgard. She's got one fine rump.

While I acknowledge that there are SOME racist cops out there, this tendency on the part of some to focus on this instead of the real problems bothers me too. I guess it's easier to blame the problem on someone else than on your son who lives in the same house, your daughter, your brother, etc. Though I fail to see what racist cops have to do with one gangbanger shooting another or (worse) an innocent bystander. I would love to ask them what a racist cop had to do with the killing of Nu Nu.

The "divorced hottie" is an idiot as are those complaining of police racism. As a white chick, I usually don't encounter racism from the cops but find it hard to believe it exists to the extent some implied. Maybe it's the 'attitudes' of those who complained about this, and not the 'attitudes' of the cops.
Who is the woman trying to rid us of the group home? I like her attitude.

I've seen this circus so many times I skipped it. The new commander is as big a joke as Joe Moron. Besides, I wanted to watch "24" too. Oh, I almost forgot. Crime is DOWN.

I'm a black guy and while I do believe there are SOME legitimate cases of racism among SOME cops (the front page story on today's Sun-Times smells a little like it), it has NOTHING to do with one guy who's not a cop shooting another guy who's not a cop. I mean, where is the racism in the shooting last night involving the white van and the kid walking down the street? And when the cops do show up to question suspects and possible witnessnes, and MAYBE bring some relief to the victim and the mother of the victim, there are always a bunch of idiots claming racism and harassment. Even as a black man I get tired of that same old song. Again, I'm willing to acknowledge that incidents of racism among cops does exist, but it has NOTHING to do with stopping one thug from shooting another while I have to cower in my home.
I also don't get it - how much is the public supposed to do? My friend actually called the police twice last week - once for a scam and once for a rowdy group of kids on Morse - they said the police were too busy!
