"Documented Gangbanger" Gunned Down in Broad Daylight

Thursday, 1:55 PM: Details are not forthcoming at the moment from the powers-that-be. But, I've got word of a shooting at 2069 West Howard this afternoon. They're calling over the radio as an aggravated battery with a handgun.

Update #1 - Alderman Ann Rainey: At about 1:30 today, there has was a shooting at the strip center just across from Elmood on Howard Street. A man, an Evanston resident, was shot 4 times in the chest and is in critical condition. He was sitting in his car in the lot in front of the convenience store. Suspected gang shooting - I will keep you updated when the chief has more info.

Update #2 - Commander Sobczyk - 4:25 PM: "A 28 year old subject was shot at Hoyne & Howard this afternoon as he sat in his vehicle. He was a documented gang member. He died as a result of his wounds at St Francis Hospital. The investigation is on-going."

28 year old male at a car wash corner of Hoyne and Howard. He was with his girlfriend when a red and gray colored minivan dropped off a gunman who shot four times hitting the victim in the chest. The gunman then fled towards Ridge Rd. on foot. He did however leave behind a critical piece of evidence and the whole thing was captured on video.

That's if the damn thing was on.

Oh, and thanks for the information. Victim is still in surgery.

Still waiting on the commanders statement.

It was on, and was being reviewed within 5 minutes of the first 911 calls.

Live by the sword, die by the sword...whatever...one less Link card.

That's really a shame. When I used to live on Hoyne all of my neighbors talked about that corner by the strip mall being really bad. I guess it hasn't changed. For all the talk about how bad Howard Street is near Gale Park and the Morse El stop, I still think that area between Howard and Touhy and Ridge and Clark has some pockets that are just as bad if not worse!

I don't get the correlation between gangbanging and Link Cards- I think they actually have money to buy food because of all the drug sales, you know...

Its going to be a long summer and yes 1 less link card to worry about

I paid my taxes, but apparently there is an alternative. If you do not believe in funding the state maybe you should explore whats going on in Palatine.

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/arlington-heights-il/TCNPFJUO8NB3RIHDO

They are trying to secede being a part of Cook County because of taxes. If you are so obsessed with the poor or as you assume "drug dealers" eating, then you should do the same. Maybe find a way out of paying for services you don't believe in.

When I think of Link or WIC moms and kids come to mind- do you want to judge people or do you want a decrease in crime and drugs off the street? Sure there are many discussions, but how about those calls when you see a drug deal occur?

Gangs and drugs are the problem first, before the residual impact and /or involvement of low income families. How about we clear the next corner before someone else gets shot, or someone uninvolved gets shot!?

Instead of being bigots at home, lets choose it or move it!!! If you don't like living here, move to the gold coast my dear... can't afford it, then leave well enough alone.

I have a hope for peace.

presstoe - she has a right to express her opinion and it doesn't mean she's a bigot - I lived in Lincoln Park for 10 years and Lakeview for 3 and even though I love my place here - I am about ready to move back. Between the trash and the thugs in this area, it's driving me crazy. I saw a diverse fellow not picking up huge dog poop from 2 big pitbulls and I asked him about getting it - he yelled every nasty word I can think of in one sentence to my friend and I. I wondered if he was going to pull out a gun and blow our heads off.

"One less link card"??. Thank you presstoe for bringing us back to reality. We have some cold hearted readers on this blog.

When I think of Link or WIC moms and kids come to mind-

These "ARE" kids of moms.

Moms who keep having kids that they can't support financially or emotionally.

They have them and then the government is expected to house them, feed them and entertain them while mom is busy entertaining her next babies daddy.

Let's be honest.

Speaking of Link cards, I think they should have a separate line in the store for those using them. They could put the slow or new cashier there since those people aren’t hurrying off to work. They have time that I don’t have. I get really sick of waiting in the line at Morse Market behind people receiving free food when I am in a hurry to get to work. Oh, and before you flame me…I was on public aid for a year when I had my son and I went to them to get off when I didn’t need it anymore. I would have waited in a separate line because I was not working and had the time. Of course the A.C.L.U. would be all over this idea.

I'm no Bible thumper but this is the first thing that came to my mimd...Mathew 7: Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Yeah, let's be "honest", Sandy. Since you're asking of honestly, I'm going to admit my family and I are on Link cards. Anybody have a problem with that? Yes, I'm on a Link card, but that sure as hell doesn't mean I'm involved in the crime in my neighborhood. In fact, I hate the crime just as much as a person without a Link card. Not everybody who's got a Link card commits a damn crime, ok? Some people have Link cards because they're POOR (no, I'm not giving that excuse to gangbangers). Ever thought of that? Or do you folks simply don't care about poor people?

I can't even think of why you people would say such cold things like that. I thought you guys were better than that. Well, if you guys look down on people with Link cards, I never should move up to Rogers Park.

Pissed off? You damn right I am.

Any further questions? Email me at my address on my profile.

IMO the only possible way this country/society is going to get the 'thugs' and gang-banger-drug dealers off our street corners is to legalize drugs and control their sale and use by adults, much like we do with booze. Everyone should take the time to view this interview:

http://www.pbs.org:80/moyers/journal/04172009/watch.html

When will 'we' come to our senses? Portugal legalized/decriminalized ALL drugs several years ago (2001) and the result has been overwhelmingly positive. Check it out:

http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=10080

Everyone needs to get informed and demand change!

I very much believe that subsidized housing, link cards, health care etc should be there for people to help them through a tough time. I think a problem a lot of people have is with people that continue to have kids and expect it to support them for their entire life. No one wants kids to suffer - just adults to take more responsibility for their own lives!

I agree that way too much money and too many resources are being wasted on "the war on drugs." It's the legalization argument that intrigues me.

It's a lot easier for the government to regulate alcohol since it requires tons of capital to produce and distribute the product. Cocaine, on the other hand, is manufactured offshore and distribution is decentralized to the extreme. Same with weed. Even a dolt like billyjoe could grow awesome hydro in his basement and keep it off the radar. Good luck getting all the independent weed growers in line.

Decriminalization seems like a better idea than legalization. Not that any of this would ever happen-there's way too much money to made in the war on drugs. And not to be a dick, but you really can't compare Portugal to the United States since it has a smaller population than IL.

I heart the R.P is no Bible beater yet goes on to quote it. Are you from Macon, GA? I don't know you either because you don't see things like I do.

Enough, already!

A gangbanger got whacked. The gangbanger that whacked him is still on the loose.

That's the topic. Let's stay focused, people.

Sorry Craig, but I fell compelled to submit a final response to BillyJoe'sBrain.

Rather than nay-say and throw up 'reasons/excuses' as to why decriminalization "won't" work, do yourself a favor and read up on the successful Portuguese model (there are others) and watch the Moyers' interview. The 'issue' is about regulation, education and abuse treatment, for those who need it (about 10% of users/imbibers, just as with alcohol). It's not about the size of the country or the ability to 'grow your own'(the current California medical cannabis system disproves that). You can brew your own beer and wine too, but who goes to that trouble when you can go to a licensed, regulated retail outlet for your booze.

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

Thank you, Craig. You're very correct. This topic is about a killing, not a Link card discussion. Though I apologize, Craig, if I made you angry by going OT.

RP60645 should be ashamed of herself for this comment in the first place. I know she was 1/2 joking, but it wasn't funny. I apologize for even letting this go on so long.

Next time I see her, I'll be sure to spank her for starting this junk.

Moving on...

I agree with decriminalization. Too bad there's so much money to be made by governments "fighting drugs." Oh, and plenty of people brew their beer and wine.

About the shootings that have been going on in the area no one cares. It's all about politics and money, not making sure the community is safe. If you want tp make the community better, find solutions. Starting with the kids. Parents need to be parents. It's rediculous. It's like no one cares because it's black on black crime. The only thing people care about around here is building more condos. It's sad. You guys were kids before you were adults . No kids don't have anywhere to play because of crack heads and no recreation centers for them. I moved fronm Evanston and I see the difference .Starting with schools. Every year you have to show proof that you still reside at the same residence, not in Chicago. You have a school nurse on school property everyday in Evanston, not in Chicago. Kids had gym everyday in Evanston, not in Chicago.Summertime, There is summer camps in Evanstron for kids to go to, not in Chicago. Basically we are failing the kids at a younger age. Who is protecting the kids. No one, besides some of us as parents.

Can I spank her for you?

I heard about the public schools considering going to a full-year schedule. Shorter school vacations may keep some of the kids and teens off of the street.

Unfortunately, a lot of gangbangers are way over the age of eighteen. I'm not just referring to those who are in their twenties. There are 40 and 50 somethings claiming gang membership.
