"Tweet" Gets Uptown Resident Her Day in Court

If I didn't know any better, I'd say this is in retaliation to those cowardly bloggers over at Uptown Update.
A woman living in the North Side Uptown neighborhood is being sued for allegedly posting on her Twitter account a "tweet" that accuses her management company of being OK with moldy apartments.

Horizon Group Management sued Amanda Bonnen Monday for publishing a false and defamatory tweet on Twitter May 12.

According to the suit filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court Bonnen wrote an update that said "Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay."

Because Bonnen's Twitter account is set to "public," everyone following on Twitter can view the defamatory statement, the suit said.
Source/read more.
Funny, Amanda Bonnen doesn't tweet anymore. Once someone finds out who's behind the curtain at UU, you can bet the lawsuits will start flying.

Craig, I think the woman has a right to say what's on her mind on her Twitter without getting sued for it. I really think people are starting to over react about bloggers, Twitters, Myspacers, etc.

I find it kind of odd that the company jumped on this woman for making the statement. It makes me think that the management in those apartments don't want people speaking out about their conditions (if there are indeed bad conditions there).

I feel that even though her statement may very well be false, she shouldn't get sued over it.

That's quite interesting - either she is entirely correct about what she is saying or way off and the owners are mad. I doubt they will get anything out of it, but it should be interesting to follow. I doubt there are any laws on the books yet for what you can twitter about. People write bad things about establishments on yelp, etc all the time

Craig - while walking the dog at 5am this morning, I saw a large puddle of wet blood on the sidewalk on Greenview between Fargo & Jarvis on the east side of the street. Any reports from the scanner this morning?

$1M bond set in Rogers Park sex assault
July 27, 2009 9:38 PM | UPDATED STORY

williamnune.jpgA Rogers Park man charged in connection with the alleged sex assault and attempted strangulation of a 19-year-old female acquaintance was ordered held today in lieu of $1 million bail.

William Nune, 37, of the 2700 block of West Greenleaf Avenue, was charged this morning with aggravated criminal sexual assault and attempted murder, said Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

The alleged attack took place about 9:45 p.m. Thursday at Nune's home, Perez said.

The victim told police she was visiting Nune when he forced himself on her while attempting to strangle her. She was able to escape and call police about 11 p.m. that same evening. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston for treatment.

Police located Nune Sunday in the 1300 block of North Maplewood Avenue and arrested him.

Nune was convicted in 2008 on a charge of aggravated battery and unlawful restraint, Perez said. He also was convicted in 1999 for unlawful use of firearms.

He is scheduled to appear in bond court later today.

Sorry, Jen, the scanners has been off for a few days. I just got beck from the Las Vegas EnduroCross and I'm still not in city mode.

That's okay, Craig...I'm astonished you can still stand to listen at all. We all deserve some peace and quiet. I'll let you know if I hear anything about what happened.

Craig, Jenn's right, you do deserve some peace and quiet. I just got off my 3 day break yesterday but when I was on it, it felt good not to worry about crime or anything like that.

Report from a neighbor - the pool of blood on Greenview was leftover from a fatal stabbing of a 50ish white male earlier this morning. Our block is getting scary again. The alderman's office requested that we be vigilant and call 911 each time we see drug/violent activity in the neighborhood so that there is a record of it.

Unknown said...

ah, i saw that pool of blood on my way to work this morning, along with some officers and detetives walking around.

does anyone have any more details as to what occured?

Unknown said...

Not certain if this incident was a fatal stabbing... I chatted with one of the detectives on the scene today as this occurred right outside the front gate of my building. He said by looking at the blood that it was "brain blood" and there was "brain matter" in the blood on the sidewalk.

One neighbor who reported the blood spill received a message back from the acting Commander of the 24th stating "Male taken to St Francis this morning bleeding from the head. It is not known how he sustained his injuries or if a crime occured."

It is kinda like musical chairs, only with buildings.
With the block building off limits despite some hefty promises that they shall return and take over again. It just has not happened.
The new management seems to have a great desire to remain scum/ mold free.

There have been several other territorial shifts with buildings being rehabbed and previous squalor shacks being eliminated.
The former residents either incarcerated, dead or hospitalized.
It is a turf war in a slow economy so expect desperate vicious crimes.

On the plus side of things did anyone here the one about the 3 thugs who attacked 2 off duty armed poloice with the old cash for clunkers craiglist scheme.

And now I just heard from another neighbor that some man was mugged on Fargo right near Greenview at 5pm yesterday. He ran into Charmer's with a cut on his forehead right after the incident. The assailants attacked him from behind and were supposedly teens.

From Area Chief Rottner:

Craig,

Man found this morning bleeding from head. Taken to St. Francis. No stabbing. May be from a fall.

You all are like a bunch of old ladies circulating rumours - fatal stabbing, mugging, brain matter - and it turns out from a fall? You all are bozos - get a life!

That was sorta like a game of Telephone: A fatal stabbing. Brain matter. Then mugged and ran into Charmers. Finally, a fall.

Every once in a while someone really stupid rises up above all the other idiots and does something reallllllllyyyyy stupid. That someone is Horizon Group Management. This should only help the woman's case because it reveals how truly incompetent they are.

Twitter-Twitter-Twitter
I personally think Horizon Group is doing the right thing. Everyone should stand up for their rights when they are being defamed. If a Landlord Tweeted about one of their tenants who had such nasty housecleaning habits that they actually caused the right conditions for mold to grow in their unit, the Landlord would be sued in a heart beat. If this Twitter is lying, her moment of pleasure could cause this Landlord thousands in lost revenue and possibly the loss of his property. I say "GOOD FOR HORIZON" it is about time the good landlords stood up for themselves.

Thumbs down to to our legal system for making it possible for anyone to file a lawsuit against anyone for virtually anything.

Thing about being sued is that even when you prevail, it has cost you thousands of dollars in legal fees. For a person with a moderate-to-low income, these fees can mean bankruptcy.

Just saw a video on CNN.com this morning on this very incident.

sandy - maybe so but not too smart from a business and PR perspective. Her tweet went to people. Now this has been posted all around the world and is making news. Even if Horizon is in the right, people are going to remember the "mold" twitter! They would have been much smarter to just have an attorney write her a letter! LOL

Razldazlrr said...

Whoops - my last post was supposed to say that her tweet only went to 20 people, or so.

Let's say "Mold Twitter" rented a one bedroom apartment from Horizon for the monthly rental amount of $800., which equals the annual rental amount of $9,600. Horizon has already lost the possible revenue from the 20 people that Mold Twitter Twitted because the odds are they will never rent from Horizon because of her Tweet. $9,600 x 20 = $192.000.00. Thats a hugh possible loss. Those 20 people tweet 20 more people and they tweet 20 more people. See where I am going with this. I think the publicity that Horizon is getting only shows that they "DON'T HAVE MOLDIE APARTMENTS" and they are willing to go to court and try to stop such slanderous Tweets that could cause them such a financial loss. Slander only hurts, it never heals.

proGun said...

How did James Brown day in court go?

Will it go to trial?

Unknown said...

sorry sandy - that just wouldn't hold from a PR standpoint. You can't possibly think that the 20 people she sent it to are going to rent from Horizon!! I mean - a lawyer will sue for about anything - but an expert will tell you that was a bad move on Horizon's part. Have their attorney send her a letter and let it drop.

The North Coast said...

The Horizon people are idiots.

Horizon has generated far more bad publicity for itself by suing this tenant than her tweet about mold ever could have.

Her tweet reached perhaps 40 people at the most, and if Horizon hadn't sued, no one else would have heard of it.

However, news of the suit against her has reached thousands, and many people would decline to rent not because a unit might have a problem, but because a tenant might be sued for complaining about it.
