About 4AM, when I walked down Morse heading home, there were several squad cars, & at least one wagon on Morse, by Jonquil. In ritzy Lincoln Park, they beef up police patrols after a few attacks.
In the last week Lunt Avenue alone has experienced a person being shot and a person being beating and mugged.
Any extra patrols for our area? No.
Any words of caution from Joe Moore? No.
The posted comment confuses two different incidents and locations. Morse and Jonquil are more than a mile apart. In Chicago, every 8 blocks is a mile.
The NOH still has the ongoing Howard Street Initiative in effect.
That said;
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE ALDERFUCK?
Why is he not getting his doofus assed self in front of the cameras, as he likes to do, and making noise about the rising tide of out of control street violence?
Vote NO MOORE in 2011!
Apparently he's not paying attention to what's going on in Uptown or just doesn't care.
If you're interested in telling what going on in RP, CNN is listening.
CNN on Chicago crime
I'm sure they would LOVE to interview you, Craig.
Same deal down here about the patrols, Craig. Our situation's slightly different, though. We were supposed to get some extra patrols in July after some people like myself had asked after all of the Shots Fired incidents in June. Funny, I haven't seen any extra squad cars coming down Diversey.
In my personal opinion, I really don't think Lincoln Park should get those extra patrols. They've only had a few attacks. In neighborhoods like RP, Uptown, mine, etc., there's been probably been countless attacks and yet no patrols can be put in these 'hoods? I swear, these aldermen/officals (except for about 95% of the police officers) are dumb.
The entire mile-and-half el track corridor from Pratt to NOH seems to be a big danger zone. The situation improves as you move east, though no place is immune.
The fact that Lincoln Park is getting extra patrols while no one else is means that either their alderman is working harder for them, or means that wealthy, high-profile areas are favored in dispensing services in these times of budgetary shortfalls and reduced services.
Is Edgewater getting extra patrols? More things have been happening there, too, yet not nearly so much as Uptown and Rogers Park.
MOTS, is there any way of finding out if this special airs online? Because not everybody has CNN on their TV (I don't).
Semi-serious question: How long before we see shootingsinmorsehellhole.blogspot.com? I probably don't want to know. (You could probably base a site on that if you included Uptown.)
Timmy, they post a lot of their reports on their website (cnn.com) so I'm sure this report, or at least segments of it, will be on there after the report airs on television tomorrow. Just keep checking.
Ok, thanks MOTS. I look forward to seeing this special.
Did anyone notice if the Lincoln Park muggings got a lot of TV news coverage? I don't follow TV but noticed it was all over the radio news.
The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that heavy news coverage leads beefed up policing to protect the Olympic bid.
5 shots heard on Ashland btwn Estes and Touhy Thurs. night around 11:30 pm. Unclear where they came from exactly but CPD car with flashing light headed south on Ashland toward Estes shortly after.
I called the police on the same 5 shots Pearl heard. Anyone hear anymore about that plinking?
VI Daley, Scott Waguespack and Tom Tunney are all screaming - and getting extra police patrols.
All the while Joe Moore remains silent.
Hey Joe... Look what happened to Helen Shiller for remaining silent on crime. Her career is about over in Uptown.
You're next.
Fellow Rogers Parkers.
I do believe something is brewing on Morse Ave despite the beautiful flower buckets displayed in front of the florist and the restaurant.
One evening this week at about 09:00 PM I saw two marked and two unmarked police cars on Morse. The marked cars were parked. One unmarked was cruising and the other was stopped with several young persons being searched and questioned. I have also noticed groups of young men congregating near Morse and Greenview, and also in front of the Golden something Mini Mart east of the el tracks. Just a few minutes ago I saw them greeting each other with complicated handshakes. I think we all need to kneel and pray for our neighborhood, our alderman, and especially the young police who are trying their best to protect us. Lord, hear our prayer.

What's brewing is the gangs acknowledging that they are gaining a foothold on Morse without real opposition from anyone (read: alderman). The bolder they get (flashing signs on the street in broad daylight, congregating in bigger and bigger numbers and taking over corners, the el station, etc.), the less likely it will be to get the neighborhood back. And apparently Moore doesn't get the equation: Flagrant gang activity + aldermanic inactivity = bye bye business. What's the incentive for places like the Common Cup, Glenwood Tap, Morseland to stick around if their customer face the threat of mugging or a bullet if they hang around too long? And if those places leave, who's going to replace them? Answer: no one, or at least no one of any variety. Hope you like cell phones and Nikes because those are pretty much the only businesses that thrive in that environment.
In addition to the "kneel and pray" strategy, you need to put a knee to your alderman and make him pray that the few viable businesses and working residents here don't throw up their hand and give up.

If they're wearing orange vests, those are DevCorp workers.
Joe's office must be on furlough.
The only time Joe's office is NOT 'on furlough' is around election time.
Angry residents of Rogers Park and Uptown, rattled by the recent surge of frightening violence in the streets are at this moment on a tear and we are hearing from some people how Moore and Schiller are dead politically and will be booted out at the next election.
Well, we've heard that crap so often before, for twenty years in fact. Helen and Joe have occupied their offices for nearly twenty years, in Joe's case, and over twenty in Helen's case. At election time, there's a lot of noise and often very plausible opposing candidates.
Yet when the votes are counted, they remain seated. In 2007, it was just heartbreaking to see Gordon lose by a lousy 200-odd votes, to sit there and see victory slip away when the last precincts came in.
Every term they serve helps them become more entrenched, with more money and more inertia in back of them.
I'm not a great political operative. I don't know WTF it takes to get people off their duffs to defeat these people. I only know that if half the people who complain the most between elections would be bothered to participate, we'd have had both these people out of office long ago.
'Rachael Slur'
...interesting name.
Hopefully those of us that are going to the Glenwood Fest today aren't shot.
Also check out the 'Jamaica Fest' in Triangle Park...noon to 6 PM today.
I live on Lunt near Morse. I hear shots about once per month. Being new to the city from the east, I used to think they were firecrackers (call me naive, I was living in a quiet burb back east). Now, I am pretty sure they are not the reverie of patriotic young men and women getting ready for their 4th of July celebrations. The shot are usually followed by yelling and screaming. There is also yelling around 1-2 AM on most nights. Not only for this reason, but I look forward to my return back east.
