What a horrid tragedy, and all because some stooge was driving drunk.

The loser who did caused this tragedy should be looking at 30 years. I don't care if it was an "accident"- the crud was driving drunk.

Drunks on the roads kill more people than die from deliberate murders, in that half the traffic fatalities involve alcohol. This event was as good as murder.

My prayers go out for Calvin and Calvin's family.

this is really bad.
I cant help thinking how this
could have been prevented.

ofcourse the drunk couldve not driven, he/she was driving quite late, jeez, you dont think to look out for drunks early in the am
but i guess it makes sense to.

I guess they were cutting across the street and thats why they or the boy was walking between two cars? Or they had just parked and one of the two cars hit was one of theirs.

I guess you can never be too careful but you also cant forsee every idiotic accident.

The boy's father said he parked on the west side of Ashland Boulevard early Saturday and his kids jumped from his car to go into their aunt's house. Santos said he heard the crash and saw that his son was crushed by the two SUVs on the east side of the street.

Ok, I am personally very paranoid
when I drop my son off anywhere.
He is 8.

I dont allow him to cross any street, especially in the middle of the street by himself, even if its a side street.

That part of ashland is very dangerous. That intersection is very irregular, and people come zooming through there quite fast. Sure its early am, but
I wouldnt let my kids just jump out of the car to cross ashland like that.

True this is a freak accident,
and maybe even being the most careful person wouldnt have prevented this. But it shows the danger of crossing in the middle of the street, which people are wont to do so much nowadays because they dont want to cross the street properly and are in a hurry.

No one thinks about chain reaction crashes like this, but I think a takeaway from this is, dont cross in the middle of the street like this and in between two cars like that, but if you do, you must be extremetly careful and make sure no cars are around.

Anyways I tend to overanalyze things.
But just from that excerpt it sounds like the parent wasnt using good judgement allowing two kids to cross the street alone, especially the middle of the street and a busy one at that.
And the daughter is only 3.

It goes without saying the driver is at fault too, but you must assume that most people driving are nuts anyways and you have to try to put as much distance between you and them.

When you have people doing careless things,
driving under the influence
and not crossing the street properly, then you have stuff like this happen. Which sucks.

Calvin Santos, 10, and his 3-year-old sister, Liliana, hopped out of their father's car and headed across the street toward their aunt's house about 5:45 a.m. Saturday in Rogers Park, said their father, Bulmaro Santos.

Another excerpt,
I have no problem with kids hopping out of cars if the door is on the sidewalk side of the same side of the street where
they are being dropped off.

This is also the city, and rogers park, where all sorts of nuts and neredowells pass through.
I guess its more by morse and ashland. Than by pratt.
But my god, I never wouldve allowed small children like that hop out of my car to cross to the other side in the middle of the street.

Why do we have crossing guards?
Because of stuff like this.

I think this wouldnt have happened if the father had parked his car in a safe spot, gotten out of the car and walked with them across the street in a crosswalk
and ofcourse watching for cars.

This just further reinforces how its not safe to cross in the middle of the street for a reason no one really takes into account,
(being crushed between parked cars)
Jeez this is just terrible.

Parked cars can act as a buffer to a crash or can crush.
Usually if a parked car is hit by a car it wont get you if you are on the sidewalk. I think.
