If there ever was a project that was jinxed, it's the Morse Avenue Streetscape. In yet another delay on the seemingly never ending project, the workers are currently on strike.
Wonder if that's the case with the Graffiti Busters, too? Quite a few buildings in the area were hit hard a couple of nights ago. If they don't remove the gang tags in the next day or two, I'll post the gang tag markings and locations on the web to help the workers out in locating them.
Oh, one more thing: If you're into watching the local gangs sell drugs and fight in public, I'd suggest a sidewalk table at Act One Cafe. You can call 911 then watch the officers drive-by, which temporarily disperses the gangs into various neighborhood cubbyholes. The food is great and you can join the 911 caller pool on how many minutes it takes for the officers to drive-by and which hole the gang member(s) will hide in.
And, for the record: No bashing the Alderman. Joe Moore has been helpful in reporting the gang markings to the authorities in charge of this process. He's personally come out and reported the buildings in question. Something must be in the water in the 49th Ward offices. I even got a cheerful email from Wayne Frazier. So now it's up to the Graffiti Busters.
Update - 7/13/2010: The graffiti has been removed.

Yeah, I saw a new tag/graffiti
on the building at greenview and farwell in the alley
looks like the mark of the devil
its the one just south of the common cup building.
I called the aldermans office and have called 311 a couple times about the sewer being backed up at wayne and morse, its disgusting and the stagnant water really stinks on hot days comingled with the acumulated trash there.
Its the corner where morse gyros is.
Strike? Seriously? I thought everyone so wanted to work! What are they striking about? Give me a break! Who exactly is striking? Obviously, another pathetic union, but which one this time?
There is some hardcore hippy graffiti under the L-tracks on Columbia.
@Razldazlrr - I heard the strike is due to some unpaid benefits.
yeah i saw that life is happy stuff on columbia viaduct
pretty funny
Btw I dont think the reader population of broken heart can stand silently while craig actually give the alderman a complement.
After reading the uptown update and seeing how that alderman has screwed that district through the years, i think we can see that joe moore while being a little crazy about stuff like foie grais is actually a decent guy.
shiller is an alderman i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy
i really think overall rogers park is in better shape than uptown.
though i still root for uptown and think in the end it will get towards a stable equilibrium where shots dont ring out all the time

three young af-am males outside the cobbler's shop, all in oversize white t'shirts, giving guff to 4-5 other af-am males in a dark green 4door toyota; the car pulls up to morse/greenview, turns north and stops; the back passenger door opens and that passenger flashes a gun in his hand like he's going to shoot about 70 feet down the sidewalk at the long-white-t's.. they change their mind and drive away. and yes, the narc' and marked cop cars were combing the area a minute or three later.. Oh PLEASE let law abiding citizens conceal & carry!
I dont know why they dont just have a stakeout.
The common cup building wouldnt be a bad choice.
Just live there and record 24/7.
Sometimes I feel like my place has a pretty good vantage point.
thats scary a.c.
either that or with the catch and release program you tag the gangbangers with radio devices like you would wild animals so you can track and record and listen
I called for "graffiti-buster" help the first week in June, and was told that someone else had called a few days earlier about the tagging that occurred on the *front* of the building I live in. I was told there was a backlog, and that it might take as much as a month for them to respond. The tags are still there, and now I see some new tags in the neighborhood- that look to be from (as I am no expert) the "latin kings".
As for Alderman Joe "Waste of Space" Moore. I will defy the request to leave him alone. He's a politician; and not seemingly a bright one at that. When asked if or what he thought he might do for his constituents who had nowhere to park their cars due to all the upgrades (handicap ramps at corners and new sewer work) and "beautification" projects that were whittling away the already few options... his answer was, and I quote: "well, we have to draw a balance."
The guy's an idiot.
CE - Sorry to disagree (and I'm not a big Moore fan) but I'm all for the beautification efforts - it will look nicer and hopefully stop some of the bad people from lingering around. I guess you will have to pay for a spot, get rid of your car or drive around for a spot. Should the handicapped not have better ramps or the sewers not be fixed so you can park your car? I don't think so!
Hey Razldazirr!!!
Should not the blind see? Should not the lame walk? Should not the leper be made clean? Should not the hungry be fed? Should not the naked be clothed? Should not the crack ho get her fix? Should not the drunk be given a beer? Should not the gangbanger be allowed to ajust his genitals in public? Should not morons like you be allowed to steal the wealth of the productive to finance your idiot dreams of utopia?
If there is no money, let the handicapped trip (or ask for help} and let the sewers back up and stink. WE ARE OUT OF MONEY YOU STUPID STUPID FOOL!!!
You go Chip Bagg.
For example, why are we "redoing" the handicapped streets when there is barely money for anything else in this damn city.
The real question should have been, why weren't they done properly the first time instead of look what a wonderful thing I just did.
Yeah, right in the middle of the biggest budget crisis this city has ever seen.
Nice job somebody!!
I'm not sure why you posted the rant from that nut Chip but my guess is the money was already allocated to the project and the discussion wasn't about money - it was about access to parking idiot.
The City is under Federal mandate to redo , and install the handicap ADA compliant sidewalk curb cuts. As originally done the grade was often too steep and did not meet the ADA code. Blame the Feds for "good enough" not being good enough.
If youre gonna live in RP or most places in the city close to the lakefront, save yourself the grief and rent a parking spot. It's either that or mucho parking tickets.
If you live in the city, learn to deal with a shortage of parking. The city doesn't owe you a place to park.
Fixing the sewers, providing adequate police and fire protection, and making sure the city can balance its budget without raising property taxes and blowing people out of the houses they struggled to buy and pay for, should come ahead of providing parking. A car is NOT a life necessity.
Cars are the only form of private property you can store in public for free. Time to make auto owners pay the FULL cost of storing their space-hogs on public streets. Pavement soaks up a massive share of public money.
Had loiterers from 6914 n wayne shooed away by cops.
Had to call about 6 times.
Yes they were bangers, but
hey this isnt transient central where joe blow can have his dinner.
This was at 7-730pm last night.
It says on the building no loitering, I guess it should say
you cant have your dinner there either.
Doesnt look good and attracts unsavory characters.
I spoke with the owners daughter of 6914 and she was on board.
Saw some bangers out last night,
but they went away quickly down farwell, or should i say FAREWELL.
=== Pavement soaks up a massive share of public money.===
Yeah, what North Coast said. Let's just close down all the paved roads. Let's go back to the dirt trail.
*yes they WERENT bangers,
sorry.
hey why cant we go back to brick roads?
How about they fix my stretch of wayne where the cobblestones are?
Christ. Shouldnt we have a couple of cobblestone roads left?
Craig, where and when did I suggest "closing down the streets and going back to dirt trails".
It is because I would like to AVOID ever having to go back to "dirt trails" that I'm for making car owners pay the costs of parking.
In case you haven't noticed, the City of Chicago is BROKE. So is the United States in general, but the State of IL and the City of Chicago are especially challenged financially.
We're all going to have start paying the costs of services we use. Transit riders are going to have to pay more fare, and parking on city streets will have to cost more.
What would you rather have, another 20% property tax hike on your condo?
I'd like to preserve what we have, and if we want to do that, we are going to have to ante up, according to our use of the services.
I walked down Morse today and was just disgusted that the work has stopped - everyone cries that they want jobs and then they go on strike - ugh!! Maybe they should try owning a business and then they can't strike - no work - no money! It's too bad another group can't just walk in and get the job done - still can't figure out why Joe Moore is such a union lover (must be big supporters)
I share your disgust, Razl.
Most city workers, and government workers in general, don't even realize that we're in recession.
While private sector employees have seen their salaries and wages DROP 1% (at least) since 1999, public sector employees and officials have continued to demand, and get, raises.
Government workers at all pay levels make a third more than they would in comparable private sector jobs.
Meanwhile, the public sector increases in size and expense while the private sector that pays for it all shrinks.
City workers and officials need to start sharing our pain. There should be NO raises for any city worker, not even the police or the firefighters, and the salaries of top officials should be rolled back 20%. I know, I know, the police haven't had a raise in three years, boo hoo hoo.
Well, the rest of us out here haven't had a raise in TEN years, and private sector incomes are now falling while jobs continue to be shed. And smaller, non-subsidized businesses haven't been so challenged since the 30s. Three business owners known to me personally have lost their businesses, and one at least has gone from being a millionaire with a net worth of about $6M to being nearly penniless, putting up every dime he could access in a last ditch effort to keep his business going, which did not work.
It's a nasty time, 1936 all over again. In California, public workers doing these very low-level, menial jobs have been reduced to minimum wage, because of CA's precarious financial condition. Illinois is up there with CA in being one of the 5 states with the worst financial problems. Time for government workers at all levels to face reality- we can't afford them anymore.
The parking around here isn't that bad compared to a lot of neighborhoods.
The pay to able to park your "space hog" suggestion is one the dumbest things I've heard. Thanks for the laugh on that one and good luck getting others to agree.
7/14/10
saw narc car hastling a car at wayne and farwell,
nice, but
i think the narcs will have more luck pulling over poor kids riding their bikes or scooters after 10pm
beat cops ofcourse ever better
or cop cars going after pedestrians etc.
those crazy kids,
they have their chaotic ways
Have you noticed the masses of people getting bigger at Loyola Park every night? The soccer groups are growing and growing with more trash, more drinking and more rowdiness. I haven't seen the police around very much. I walk my dogs and watch the craziness between the soccer people and the homeless drunks - I'll be glad when the snow is on the ground and they all go back under their rocks.
oops
Craig! we need a new entry
otherwise this blog will only be known for the blog with the highest average number for comments section.

Why isn't this blog ever kept up with? I'm not even going to bother following it anymore if there's never any new news.
well, sounds like the union got their way and they will finally be going back to work - wonder if we will really ever see the streetscape work done! LOL
@geofredo
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, Why hasnt this been thought of/done before. Catch and release, thats what they should do with anyone with 3 confictions. Heck I'm 60 and nerver been arrested, not so hard. Better yet tag them like in the olden days cuttin off hands, fingers, thumbs, legs, testes, etc with no prosthetics afterward.
@Razldazlrr
Fixing, beautifing and making things more accessible is fine but how about using common sense when spending money. There is a huge curb bump out right across the street from the Dominicks on Broadway. Not only is it not attractive but I would venture to say an accident waiting to happen. Im surprised some motorist hasnt hit it or the pedestrian on it. Not Moore's ward but example of useless/ineffective design. Im sure there are examples of this kind of thing being done in our ward.
@ The North Coast
OK this is apples and oranges BUT what I dont get is a private firm like LAZ making money off of what tax payers have paid for streets/curbs ergo parking spots. Why hasnt some smart attorney taken this to court? Street fairs are unable to charge for entry because its a public thoroughfare(the fees are donations). SO next time you can refuse to donate and walk into ie The Old Town Art Fair or any other street fair. Anyway, why can LAZ make money off of us. Selling to LAZ was the dumbist thing ever!! Since it was such an asset, why couldnt the city get loans against the profits, you know LAZ did.
Oh and since the government now owns a car manufacturer, why not guarantee a parking spot.
@ The North Coast
Comment on pay the cost of parking.
Car owners do pay to own cars and thus pay for parking indirectly. IE city sticker, licence plates, and gasoline taxes. Im sure there are a few more but it all comes out of everyones pocket. If you dont pay for it here, you pay for it there.
