Three minutes in the new year and gun shots ring out in Rogers Park. The first calls for "shots fired" at 6808 North Wayne were called in to 911 at 12:03 AM on January 1, 2011. Police confirm "shots were fired," with the bullets flying through the air from the alley at 1422 West Farwell.

I used the nifty nabbers to pickup a completely full glad force flex bag. It was especially bad in the parkway in front on Common Cup. It was amazingly bad, but I made short work of it with the nabbers.
Some guy parking for coffee thought I was the maintenance man.
The area in front of Golden MiniMart on Morse looks much much better. It looks like someone swept up all the little crap, all the cigarette butts. The Morse street scape wasnt done so that the street could continue to look like skidrow.
Did you find any bullet shells?
Hey craig,
I did see one maybe shell casing by wayne and farwell, its was red and cylindrical like a shotgun casing, that I saw on my clean up on new years eve before the shots fired on new years eve. My son did hear the shots fired nye but I was asleep. Glad no one was hit.

BTW here is the link to nifty nabber, an excellent trash pickup tool, its a back saver. They have them at home depot for 20bucks.
It allows you to pickup more trash too thats further away and its easier to pickup really nasty plastic bags that are soaked in dirt and water etc....

Well, morse will continue to look like skidrow as long as they allow the ghetto gates - they are disgusting - are they actually legal???
Those steel gates that come down over the shop windows?
probably grandfathered in.
Honestly I have a soft spot for those, it reminds me of the dark days of the city long ago when that was normal.
Something that should be phased out though.
Nice new Map of Chicago and Rogers Park on the Historical Society Window at Morse and Greenview though. Very Nice.
I feel we who do not have to suffer the losses incurred by business people when their stores are busted into, and robbed and vandalized, don't really have the right to demand these people remove the only real protection they have, for the sake of aesthetics.
I'm all for the corrugated metal doors that roll down over your plate glass to protect your storefront, but these cost money of course. Most people have to have their gates for protection, especially if they sell something like liquor or electronics.
I don't blame these small businesses for keeping their "ghetto gates" in place as long as we have regular break-ins, and if I were a small business owner, I would tell any resident who doesn't like my gates to promise to pay for my insurance and deductable for any losses I might incur as a result of break-ins, if he wants me to take my gates down.
Let's help our local businesses, not further harass and obstruct them. As it is, we've had a couple of small grocery store owners killed in robberies and a couple of people put out of business by break-ins in the past few years. These people eke out crummy livings owning these places, which they'd probably happily trade for a half-decent job. Let's not make life nastier for them than it already is.

The shots fired were in celebration of the arrival of a new year. What is the problem with that? No one was hurt. How would you have us celebrate? Quietly eating animal or shell fish flesh at a local restauant? That doesn't sound like fun at all. I myself like a more traditional RP new year celebration that includes a little gun fire.
Touche Chip Bagg,
The way you write it makes it sound downright sinister to have surf and turf, i like that..... But that is nuts to try to normalize gunfire shot off at newyears whether it be a tradition of low life or not. So if only if someone was hurt you would have a problem with the gunfire?
Well many people over the years have been shot by celebratory gunfire.
So Cheap Brat is a vegetarian then?
Or Vegan?
Ok I got it.
Cheap Barf is calling me out for being decadent.
Shooting a gun when no threat is visible just for the hell of it, thats not decadent? And Is Cheap Barf telling me that these gunslingers are also vegetarian/vegans as well?
On the other hand eating surf and turf is as much an american tradition as is firing guns off for the hell of it as many gunfighters from the wild west would attest to, so that Cheap Barf is why your comment makes no sense.
