46th Ward Aldermanic Race Heats Up

Great quote:
“The big difference between Mr. Cappleman and me is that I've committed to spending $1.3 million dollars to put more police on our streets,” Phelan said, referring to discretionary funds alderman control. “Mr. Cappleman wants to spend it on decorator flower pots and benches.”
                                                             Molly Phelan
I know this has nothing to do with Rogers Park, I just enjoyed the quote. This race is turning out to be a barn-burner.

The 46th Ward race is exceptional because the voters there actually have TWO decent candidates to choose from.

I hope for their sake that Phelan prevails, but Cappelman would be at least alright.

Much different than here, where we had to choose between Bad and Much Worse.

So every penny of the menu money goes to cops?

That is no way to staff a police force or use those funds. That's just campaign BS to say, hey I will keep you safe, my opponent wants flower pots.

I don't even know if that is even possible?

Uptown needs more police on the streets more than it needs almost anything else right now. Public safety is the most urgent issue Uptown has on its plate.

The only other good use for the money would be to put it toward building a new el station to replace the horrible Wilson and Lawrence stations. However, rebuilding el stations is such an expensive proposition that $1.3M would be a drop in the bucket, and the rebuild should be part of a complete rebuild of the decrepit Red Line.

This race has alot to do with Rogers Park, I follow Uptown Update and Edgewaters Blog....

What happens there affects us and what happens up here affects them.

Crime spills over from one neigborhood to another, especially with that crazy drug deal gone wrong this past week on winthrop.

If Uptown continues to decrease its crime that is good for Rogers Park and vice versa and for all parts inbetween.

I am in no way saying that Uptown and Chicago in general doesn't need more police, I just question how you use those funds to hire cops? So Alderman Bill Dollars just calls up the Superintendent of police and say's I got 1.3 Mil send more please?

Really?

Uptown doesn't need more po-leece. It needs to reduce the number of CHA housing that doubles as crash pads for multitudes of moronic, criminal gangbangers.

If these idiots weren't on the streets shooting each other and stealing cars--only to total other cars in the process--the residents wouldn't be screaming for more cops.

Agree with billyjoe. But cleaning up the bad housing will take time. Phelan is extremely committed to getting rid of badly managed housing, and disciplining bad landlords.

For the time being, the area needs more law enforcement, in combination with concentrated efforts to clean up the bad housing and reduce the number of people with criminal records living in the area.

Use the $1.3 million to buy ski masks for everyone in the 46th ward.
