Struggle over unregistered handgun has local church looking for help

On October 20, 2012, there was a struggle between a father and son over an alleged unregistered handgun, which went off, causing the son to be hospitalized and the father incarcerated.
This has now turned into a death investigation.

On October 24, 2012, 17 year old Terrance Johnson, of the 1300 block of West Estes, passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. This is a real tragic story all around.

The father, Charles Johnson, 53 years old, and a convicted felon, allegedly had the gun hidden in a garage, and the son found it. According to reports, the elder Johnson knew the gun was missing for 6 months, not reporting this to the police.

According to reports, Terrance found it, and had it hidden from his parents for those many months the gun went missing. No one but Terrance knows why Terrance had the gun - or what he did with it for the six months in his possession.

Sadly, now a mother has lost a child, and a husband. All over a gun that shouldn't have been in the possession of Charles or Terrance in the first place.

Charles Johnson is being held at Cook County on a $50,000 bail for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The Rogers Park Presbyterian Church, located at 7059 North Greenview, has set up a fund to help  what's left of this family defray costs for Terrance's memorial. Donations may be made to Rogers Park Presbyterian Church, c/o Suzette Johnson, 7059 N. Greenview Ave., Chicago IL 60626. Call 773-262-3667 for more information.

This type of reporting is nothing less than infuriating. "...a real tragic story all around."? Who writes this load of crap. The mindset that creates this viewpoint is so liberal, so victim-driven, and so completely at odds with the facts that it cannot be argued. It must be shouted down, battled, and defeated. The two males who are at the center of this story are criminals and degenerates. Their immediate family is the filthy, toxic pond where this scum has been allowed to grow and fester. The result of this poisonous mix was preditable and unavoidable. Nature has taken its course. There is no tragedy here.

Where do we make donations to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in order to cover the cost incurred by this dead moron and his idiot father? Huh?

You bet it is. A 17 year old is dead, a father is in jail, and a mother grieves.

I heard of this event and I'm not only looking into it, I've asked Jennifer Carruso, who runs the domestic advocacy program at Northside Community Resources to look into, also.

I did hear the guy was arrested on Thursday.

I go to Rogers Park Presbyterian Church and am thankful to the lord for his compassion with the Johnson family and what they are going through in this time of crisis. We should all give our money we can to help this poor family out. Those in need should be helped.

Dude, stop masturbating in your mom's basement. Don't forget to zip your pants up before you go upstairs. One more thing. Don't forget to wipe your hands before you touch anyone.

No one wants to touch sticky hands.

Very tragic story indeed. The handgun laws are ridiculous in the City of Chicago anyway. Other cities laugh at us!

Why all of the Craig bashing and name calling aginst Mr. Johnson and his son here? Regardless of what ones position on this incident is, it is a tragedy that this unfortunate incident ocuured: that the son was shot and died, and that now we must put a man (back) into prison as mandated by law for the multiple firearm violations which he committed. Pencils don't make spelling errors, spoons didn't make Rosie O'Donnel into an obese pig, and cars don't make people drive drunk. These are all crimes committed by people just as the multiple firearms violations that Mr. Johnson committed which resulted in the death of his son was a crime comitted by a person and not the unregistered gun that he, a convicted felon, illegally posesses and stored. If our society would actually enforce laws rather than talking about it, we would have less crime. Unfortunately, most politicians talk out of both sides of their mouths on crime issues which leaves us with an ineffective criminal justice System. Mr. Johnson should be found guilty of multiple firearms violations and be sentenced to prison for a substantial period of time.

.....I wouldn't be surprised to see Mr. Johnson's statement to police rescinded and modified to claim that the gun was not his and that he only caught his 17 year old son with it and was trying to cover for the boy under the presumption that he would survive the shooting. Just a guess.
