Oh, murder tree - Oh, murder tree... (Update)

While other neighborhoods showcase a community Christmas tree for the locals to look at for the holiday season, Rogers Park has a murder tree. This star covered tree is located at Lunt and the lakefront to let the residents know how many people got gunned down this year in the city of Chicago.

How cute. There's nothing like looking at a bunch of stars that represent those killed by violence in our wonderful city to put you in the holiday spirit. Put on by our very own little Christmas elf s at Occupy Rogers Park, the tree has 499 stars with names of all those who have dripped blood on the streets, alleys and sidewalks of Chicago in 2012.

I believe they may be missing a few stars, though. Crime in Chicago has the murder numbers at over 510, with 2570 people shot this year.

Merry Christmas, Rogers Park. Now get out there and shop local. Just watch out for the flying bullets. You could be the next star on our Rogers Park murder tree.

UPDATE: Thanks, Rich Miller, at Capitol Fax for linking this story up to your Capitol Fax readers today. The link hits have been coming in from your website all day.

Maybe it's just a poor angle but it looks like a few white stars clumped together....not 499 stars. And no BLACK stars. Isn't this a racially biased depiction of what has actually happened?
HEY Occupiddle Rogers Park!
Where are the BROWN and BLACK stars?

Why don't you join us Baggins and stop your adolescent whining? Tell us how to do things the right way. Either that or shut the fuck up and go beat off on a bag of cheetos. Better yet, go get a job.

We must remember that 10 billion years ago the universe was created in a massive explosion. In the end, we are all made of stardust. We are all the same and all lives are sacred. I will pray for all of you and light a memory candle for the children who have fallen.

Craig you have outdone yourself. Hilarious! Yes Rogers Park is very festive now with our very own Murder Tree.

Philip I think it is very disrespectful to call murder hilarious. It's very hurtful. You must be one of the bad ones I hear about at meetings and drum circles.

Isadora MoonlightLonetree is correct. There is nothing funny about a person getting murdered. I'd wish the occupiers would focus on helping the police in capturing the one's who are doing these killings.

Let's work to get murderers off the streets and locked up behind bars for a long time.

That's what Occupy Rogers Park should focus on. Not creating glorified gang shrines in some tree.

True. Well its one of those things that you should either laugh or cry, but not a great thing for Rogers Park to be known for.

Isadora do you have room for one more in your drum circle? ;)

75% to 80% of the murders in Chicago are gang related. Gang wars at the root of Chicago's high murder rate.

Gang wars are NOT at the root of Chicago's high murder rate. The root cause is LACK OF FUNDING FOR EDUCATION. Don't you people listen to our political leaders?
I am sorry if I offended you, FOG. I just prefer my murder tree to be decorated with more than one shade of color. In the future I won't criticize your holiday decorating choices. My personal murder tree has stars of many colors.

I really think we should call this the life tree and do a drum circle around the base of it. It would be beautiful. I'll pray for Craig, and Phillip, and Chip. Everyone seems to need to relax and enjoy a good chant. This is a beautiful place and we live by the water which is the giver of life and we need to embrace the lives we own and love.

I fail to see why gangbangers aren't branded as terrorists, stripped of their citizenship and deported to the nearest country that will take them.

Hey, Sal, make another phoney email account and name and waste more time of your worrying about me and my drinking habits. Those same type of worded comments have been worn out by Hugh for a couple of years now under various different internet names.

I worry about closeted internet stalkers like you when I walk down the streets. It's very creepy to know some moron spends so much time worrying about me and commenting on this site faster than I can delete the last one.

There's a great website your anonymous kind. It's called Everyblockhead.

Greetings from the Dark Ward. Apparently Becca has infected the Hellhole and now is suppressing freedom of speech and expression. Congratulations Lord Gernhardt. You are being tutored by a wise mistress and have become one of her best soldiers. Beware the Occupy movement and Friends Of Gidget. They are not your friends. Respectfully, your Lord and Brother from the Dark Ward.

Illinois ranks 47th in the US for
education funding. Murders begin in the home. No dad, no job, can't read, nothing but a perfect TV work. Everyone has everything. Most of the victums got in the way of the 18-30 year olds who figured a way to get enough $ for bullets for robbery, gang vengence, drug wars. The public simply got in the way. A murder tree, nice touch.

I am MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVE than Craig. I am so far RIGHT I doubt your empty head and pencil neck can twist far enough in that direction to see me.
