Accident on Granville

7:50 AM: A car rammed a student at 1810 West Granville this morning. The accident was serious enough to send the youth to Illinois Masonic. His parents have been notified and major investigators are going to the scene. Nothing further at this time.

This is a dangerous intersection. Living a few steps away from where the accident occurred, I have seen numerous motorists ignore red lights, plus, I have had a few close calls myself while crossing the street. And the presence of a crossing guard on weekday mornings does not seem to deter certain drivers from blowing red lights or not yielding to school kids or ANYONE crossing the street. There IS a police camera at the intersection, but I question how effective it has been in preventing crime or discouraging drivers from engaging in dangerous driving habits.

Thanks for sharing that, Chicago Girl.

A bizarre sidenote to this corner.
Long before Illinois passed a general right turn on red law, this is believed to be the first intersection in Chicago to get signs that permitted right turns on red.

After the general law was passed, this was the first place that "No Turn On Red" signs were put up!

This city is absolutely clueless about traffic engineering or traffic control!

Good traffic engineering makes good traffic control far easier & makes the streets safer for everyone.

I spoke this morning with the crossing guard stationed at the corner of Granville & Ridge where the kid was hit by a car. She said that the kid who was walking around following the incident. So I am assuming that he was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He apparently landed on the driver's windshield. I saw the aftermath of the accident, when two CPD squad cars were blocking the street on Ridge.

Another thing I need to point out: There isn't always a crossing guard there to escort school kids. On many occasions, I have crossed that street between 8:00 am and 8:30 am, and there would be no crossing guard.
