A sexual assault occurred around the Farwell and Sheridan area early Sunday morning. A Loyola University student was the victim. The female was just wandering around the Farwell and Sheridan area for 20 minutes around 3 am on Sunday morning when she was sexually attacked.

If you were at the CAPS 2431 meeting on Monday night, (Feb 13) this information was given to us by a police officer at the meeting.

This is always awful when it happens. Regardless of the victim's alleged lack of judgement- she is not to blame. I suspect most of us women have at one point or another wandered a bit in our youth. I am never out late at night alone. I don't even usually walk down Morse after dark alone, but that doesn't mean no one should.
I have also looked on the website at the sex offenders registered in our hood- there are indeed ALOT. I worry about the kids wandering around after school too.
I hope the police can catch this scumbag especially for the victim's peace of mind.

These incidents are all too common and frequent around college campuses, in parks, even downtown. It is a crime of hate, like it or not. When an abuduction happened NOH in November, there were various opinions stated. Nonetheless, I'm relieved to read what some of you have written, ashamed of the mentality others have exhibited. Yes, prostitutes are in the front line for this kind of abuse and it happens. But a predator will attack any woman, any age, if his rage is in control. I'm concerned by the manner some of us walk around with those cute little purses dangling from the shoulders, eyes darting around showing fear. Just what a mugger or rapist is looking for. That's why there will be a Self-Defense Workshop for women on March 25 at Loyola Park from 11:30am-1:30pm. It's not to learn kung-fu or any other kick and kill techniques but more of an overview of being aware of one's surroundings, aware of self and others around. I'm certain simple self-defense techniques will be taught. It's free to all Rogers Park women and their daughters.

It makes it appear as if you're more invested in the consternation you can create than finding workable solutions for people. Whether you do this consciously or unconsiouly you're very manipulative.
I think you're a smart person. Unfortunately, you have some very deep seated anger. And this anger is not being channelled effectively. In fact when you make very stupid comments it works against you and erodes away at any effectiveness you may have.

Since we've degenerated into absurdity, I can't help but jump in.
1. It is a self-evident truth that no one deserves to be raped, and that anyone who is is deserving of our sympathies and best wishes for recovery (if such is possible) from such a horrific attack.
2. However, if the weaker sex should find herself wandering naked on any street in the world she should EXPECT one of two things to happen 1) a kindly soul comes to her rescue; 2) she gets attacked (or at least whistled at). No one, not even women, gets a free pass for stupid behavior. If you walk down any street in the world with a fistful of $100 bills it shouldn't come as a big surprise if you are robbed. We have all been young, we have all done foolish things. Most of us have not suffered for it. But it was due to dumb luck if we didn't suffer for our stupidity.
If a woman walks down the street naked she may not "deserve" what she gets but she ought not to be terribly surprised by it. I once had a colleague express horror that a business associate made a pass. I could not resist pointing out that perhaps he thought she was open to such since she was showing more cleavage than a Playboy centerfold. Ladies, you are responsible for your actions and if you act like you want something then don't be surprised by what you get. It's biology. And we women know damn well that our sexuality, should we chose to use it, can be a power and a weapon. Let's not pretend otherwise.
That said, rape is about rage and control and opportunity. If you know that, and you know that there are some people in the world who will take advantage of opportunity to vent their rage and control, then one must do one's best to stay out of harm's way. That is what Toni's safety program is about. The best defense is a good offense. Further, it is usually the most vulnerable in our society who are attacked be they naive drunken college students or prostitutes.

the two points i would like to highlight from todays discussion are "victim empathy" and "street smarts".
as a person who has known many people who have experienced crime, myself included, there is a unique perspective and understanding that comes with that experience. unfortunately, there is often much more truth in the real details than is often revealed in sketchy police reports or articles. lots of of mistaken assumptions can be made and these assumptions,very often don't help the victim.
in new york, where i grew up, crime is so pervasive, most of us are born with "street smarts". it's like an urban evolutionary survival instinct and unfortunately, i see much less of that awareness here in chicago.
we have a responsibility to not put ourselves in harms way. it's a skill that can be taught and i thank toni for her follow up on organizing the class that is being offered.women especially, might want to take advantage of the safety tips.
new yorkers have a different view of things than we do.check out this site.

i guess you're referring to my comment , so i will respond. if you notice, i used the word "different" to describe new yorkers view of how to deal with crime, not "better" as you suggest. if i thought n.y. was better, i would still live there. in the 31 years i was there i found n.y. to be very dirty, very expensive and very scary and so when i had the chance to move, i did.
chicago is a far more liveable city in every way in contrast to n.y. and chicago is not the poor sister to n.y.. i don't believe that for a n.y. minute and that's why i live here.
if crime rates overall are worse here, well that's bad for us. no individual city owns the patent on "street smarts" which is just an overall awareness of your environment. suggestions to keep yourself safe belong in all cities and suburbs now.
if you have the chance to glance through that site, the stories told by the women there paint a not so pretty picture of n.y., even today. and i am not suggesting anyone use those tactics, it's just information to try and understand how others are dealing with crime and quality of life issues.

Teen sexually assaulted while walking home

A 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted early Sunday as she was walking in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood.
Police said the woman was walking home about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 West Farwell Avenue when a man attacked her and pulled her behind a parked van, where he sexually assaulted her, a police spokeswoman said Monday.
She was taken to St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, where she was treated and released.
No one was in custody, and a detailed suspect sketch was unavailable Monday, police said.
