* 49th Ward Democratic Machine Loses

We really don't like to pat ourselves on the back. But, heck, why not. We earned it. I wanted to wait until the entire figures came in before I announced this news. Now we have it. This is promising news.

The 49th ward Democratic machine led by Alderman Moore and Dave Fagus got beaten by a rag tag group of concerned citizens led by James Ginderske and the "Broken Heart."

Last month Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool defeated County President John Stroger in the 49th ward.

Not by a small margin either: 57.75% to 42.25%.

Forrest Claypool had 2795 votes - John Stroger had 2045 votes.

All the dirty tricks they tried on James and I during the election day campaign. All the paid staff they had. All the effort they put in stealing campaign signs. All that money they spent on hoagies. And they still got beat. If this were a little league baseball game, there would have been a slaughter rule. (Joke for Alderman Moore, he'll get it.)

Don't look to Harrington or the other guy. They had nothing to do with this. They were sitting on the sidelines.

James and I want to thank all the folks for helping us out and we appreciate the vote of confidence the residents of the 49th ward had in Forrest Claypool when casting their vote.

With this victory we ask that our 49th ward committeeman look to Forrest Claypool as the democratic choice if John Stroger fails to fulfill his duty as candidate on the democratic ticket in November. The word is President Stroger will not be able to recover strong enough to run for re-election.

We earned that request David Fagus. Don't you think so? The voters of the 49th ward think so.

Who the hell are the 2,000 people that voted for Stroger? Cynically, maybe this is an example of why we do need a poll tax. On a personal level, was Stroger giving out free hoagies on voting day? Man, I wish I would have seen that. There were no hoagies at the Loyola Fieldhouse. I would have taken the hoagie and still voted for Claypool.

You must excuse Fagus, particularly since he heard that report that Stroger's son, Ald. Todd Stroger (8th), may be tabbed to replace daddy on the November ballot. When Fagus heard that news he probably made a quick dash over to the nearest Kinko's to polish up his resume, because Fagus knows he'll be fired about five minutes after Republican Tony Peraica is sworn in as County Board President in December.

I spent two years working with Todd Stroger in the Jury Commission office more than a decade ago. Take it from me... Todd makes his father seem brillant by comparision. Peraica must be salivating at the prospect of going into a debate against Todd. If that happens, it won't be pretty.
