Hi Craig.. My girlfriend and I were just up in the neighborhood looking at a wonderful place on Estes. We're moving from Columbus, OH for jobs and wanted to do some research on Rogers Park when we ran into your blog. Excellent writing, but it's really depressing. Is it really that bad?

I've lived in RP since 1991 and am still here to talk about it so, no, RP is not that bad. What you read on this blog is the frustration many in this area have with the lack of leadership from our elected officials, and that we've largely been ignored by City Hall. The crime here tends to be one of two flavors: 1) gang on gang; 2) addicts robbing for money to bankroll their habits (there are other crimes such as rape and property damage by little brats but they happen everywhere in the world).

If you move here you will have the benefit of the best lakefront in town, great public transport, and an eclectic and diverse group of people. What you will lack is concentrated shopping and entertainment though that is increasingly improving (and Evanston and Andersonville are not that far away, particularly if you have a car). You will live in one of the most unique communities in the U.S. outside of Queens. But it comes with some challenges.

Where would I rather live? Gold Coast or a community that has a slightly seedy side to it where on a Sat. evening my husband and I and our two Newfoundland dogs could go drink Guinness at the local watering hole? For me it's the latter. And here's a shout out to Poitin Stil. Thank you for making us welcome. We had a great time and we'll be back very soon.

Jason: Check out Edgewater. We're not half as Neurotic as Rogers Park.

Edgewater not neurotic? My dear Toto, how else does one describe most of the denizens of Lakewood-Balmoral. Neurotic and a little fascist, and apparently they have ill behaved children (and parents) if I recall last year's kerfuffle at A Taste of Heaven. Plus, y'all have limited lake access. I'll grant you Maryann Smith, though. Your alderman beats our alderman. And she's a girl which makes our guy a, well, fill in the blank.

That building looks like hell.

Great. Thanks for your feedback everyone! I think we are, in fact, tomorrow, signing the deal for the place on Estes. I know we're both really excited and looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you.

From research and talking to folks that have lived in RP, we are under the impression that the area is really on the up and we hope to be a part of that.
