"Investigators found only a brace where a smoke detector should have been mounted in the Ramirez's apartment. I don't know what happened to it and we may never know," said Alderman Moore, again doing his best to defend his frequent campaign contributor and neighborhoood slumlord buddy - Jay Johnson.

"We found no evidence of any smoke detectors, period. Anything can be removed, but there would have to be a place where it was hooked up and there wasn't," said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
