Blognotes: 10:30 AM. It's official. Let the sun shine on Rogers Park. Even with the dark cloud that hangs over us today, the sun really is shining in the 49th ward. As you look at the dark, ugly sky, remember all of Alderman Moore's dirty tricks these last few days. His blatant Illegal electioneering right down to the end. I heard it all.
Let's rest in our own wonderful sunshine today - catch a few of the good feeling rays, but let's not bask in the sun too long, we all have work to do. Alderman Moore will be fighting for his political life in the April 17 runoff. I still have fight left in me, do you?

As hot and bothered as a lot of people got on these blogs over this election, it sure seems it was a bit of a bore to most of the rest of the people in the ward. How does one get those folks motivated to vote? That's the important question for the next two months.

I am now wondering about these various violations of election laws that happened yesterday.
I noticed this morning that ALL of the Gordon and Adams signs havebeen properly removed by 6:00am, while Moore's are left ALL over the place, even with the army of workers he had out yesterday. In addition, there are many Moore signs on public property all over the 49th outside, of the designated polling places. Aren't both of these things violations?
Also, wasn't Moore kicked out of several places during the day for electioneering? Even as late as 6:00pm I heard he was removed from the Field school for it. Apparently he REALLY doesn't care about the rules of the election...no matter how many times he's told of them.
Also, will TW be following up with the possible violations of the signature collections posted on this blog several days ago?
Anyway...who is in charge of investigating such violations? Is that a city, county or state thing? I'd like to know because I would like to start putting pressure on those officials to do something about these violations so it doesn't happen again at the run-off.
Better than what I thought before I went to bed. Kept dreaming about this election all night. Glad to see that there will be another vote. It could be close.
This must mean we'll have good city services from the ward while the nail biting continues?

well unless we get EVERY single vote that went to ginderske and adams, we are screwed. also, are people going to be motivated to vote again in april. unfortunately, moore's lead on gordon was so large that i am worried it won't be overcome. four more years of JoMo here we come.
I'm very pleased that Don Gordon is in a runoff with "Lying" Joe. But I was surprised to see how poorly Chris Adams did. It almost allowed the alderweasel to sneak back in (but fortunately, it did not).
I heard on WBEZ this morning that Joe is confident that come April he will win because he will get one of the runner-up candidates' votes. He stated that this candidate and he share a political philosophy and vision for the ward. My first thought was that he meant Ginderske, but he never said a name.
Don Gordon needs to get out the vote. What are the rules for the run-off? Can you vote April if you did not vote yesterday or are all registered voters eligible?
As far as the electioneering complaints, what needs to happen is the following:
1) Someone needs to find one of the people forced to campaign for Moore that TW wrote about, get them to sign an affidavid and then file a civil rights lawsuit. Asking others to investigate will ultimately accomplish nothing. Find the people who were exploited and get statements from them.
2) At the run-off, Gordon needs to get a LOT more people on the ground. If all y'all are really concerned, ask your employers for a sick day and offer your services to Gordon to patrol the grounds on the day of the runoff.
3) 5-6 people not associated with Gordon's campaign literally follow Joe Moore around on election day to all these polls. If he is doing all these things people are alleging, he's not going to be able to get away with it if people are following him around from poll to poll and documenting these abuses.
If he does something illegal, get someone to make a statement or sign an affidavit and file complaints with the Elections Board. If they don't respond, the voter impacted can probably file a lawsuit.
It's got to be a big violation, folks. Not many people really care about a print-out on top of a box of donuts.
For Gordon to win:
1) Gordon must allign himself with the Mayor and ask for the mayor's help. If Moore attempts to rail Gordon by stating he's another "puppet" of da mayor, Gordon needs to be able to show the Mayor is going to help him improve business in the ward with an influx of dollars and that the ward has suffered as a result of Moore's poisoned relationship with Daley.
In other words, Gordon needs to show that by alligning himself with da mayor Rogers Park can expect some concrete improvements and support.
2) The gloves have got to come off. Gordon needs money for mailers that explain Moore's damning relationship with developers Coe and Johnson. Johnson is heading to housing court again. He's on Moore's zoning board.
Moore made comments in the news-star about not ruling out a marina in Rogers Park, despite the wishes of the community. That needs to come out in a seperate mailer as well. These need to be well-timed. You gotta go after the dude and attack his base. Unlike Craig, Toni, Hugh and WGN's "test polling" numbers, you have to use actual facts. Sorry for the dig craig. You know I like ya, but still...
3) Gordon needs the support of Ginderske for sure and probably Adams. Adams got absolutely owned in the primary despite having the support of the Chamber and a lot of money to spend on mailers. Strange that a self-described journalist would run for office. If you ever worked in a news room, you know what I mean...
Adams had a lot of money and strong support while Ginderske -- full disclosure: I voted for him -- ran a clean campaign with very little funds and still came out with almost 15% of the vote. Good showing. Ginderske will broaden his message, learn from his mistakes and mount a serious challange in 2011.
4) Gordon needs to turn out a lot of voters, attack Moore's base and really make a race out of this. Moore wins if he can stay out of the spotlight, rely on his base and mail several new pieces in the final days before the run-off. He has plenty of money and no incentive to do anything.
Moore will win if Gordon doesn't shore up some serious support from outside the ward and attack Moore.
Buckle up, kids. This ride ain't over.

I called the Chicago Board of Elections repeatedly regarding an incidence I thought might be a violation. The first time I called, I spoke to a young woman named Karen in their legal department. She said she would have to pass it on to the attorney and would have him call me back. He never did. I called several more times but could only reach voice mail so I left messages. I'm still waiting for a call back.
The incident was this: A man called me three weeks ago, identifying himself as the person who recently signed me up to vote. After telling me I could vote early, and where, he asked me if I was going to vote for Joe Moore for Alderman. I asked him why he wanted to know. At first he tried to avoid answering me - just kept asking if he could put me down as voting for Joe Moore. We danced for a minute or two until finally he identified himself as working for "Citizens for Joe Moore." He went on to say that it was this group that had registered me to vote. My complaint to the Board of Elections is this:
1. When he offered to register me to vote (in the atrium of Gateway Plaza) he never identified himself as representing the Alderman or any group related to the Alderman.
2. I have an unlisted phone number but now the Alderman's office has it along with all the other information I put down when registering to vote, including the "personal" information I gave them for security purposes.
3. Last but not least, I wanted to know if it was legal for a candidate to use my voter’s registration information to then call me and ask if I was going to vote for him. I find this to be very intimidating.
O.K., so now I find out that Joe flagrantly broke the law regarding electioneering as well as not removing his signs from public places. Of course, there was what happened in November regarding the slave labor (lets call it what it is, please) of people in recovery and recent parolees. I am appalled by this behavior and I really want to know, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING A STOP TO ALL THIS?
I'll make the phone calls, I'll write the letters, I'll interview the individuals involved (just let me know who they are) and I'll try to get an article published in the News Star but PLEASE - WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING! We have to do it before any more time goes by. This man must not be reelected.

Fargo woman -- when a group registers a person to vote they may NOT campaign (or be within 100 feet of alcohol being served) so your voter registration was correctly handled. Basic voter registration info -- phone, address, etc. -- is available to anyone who legitimately obtains it from the Board of Elections. This is a good thing because then candidates can get in touch with registered voters (while passing on nonregistered people). We want the DG campaign to be able to get their message to all registered voters because we know the JM campaign will be doing it big time.
Don't complain that a candidate reaches out and tries to get them to vote for you. Save complaints if they aren't!
One more chance to defeat Mr. BigBox/Foie Gras guy.
Margot and Dr. O -- I don't tink it's that big a deal for a candidate to go to the polls, shake hands with judges and thank them.
My friend is a judge and she said Don Gordon did it too. And instead of giving out donuts, he handed the judges bananas. Healthier too! But not that big a deal for either candidate. They both did it.
Thank you, Pamela, for that answer to my question. I still find it a bit intimidating to be asked by any candidate if I intend to vote for them. It just seems like an abuse of power. But . . . c'est la vie.
