* More on 'Operation Triple Threat'

Craig,

You should consider expanding your "Operation Triple Threat" entry to include this statement from Evanston Police Chief Eddington, which was posted on Evanston 8th Ward Alderman Ann Rainey's message board yesterday:

"OPERATION TRIPLE THREAT"

Operation Triple Threat was initiated on 1 March 07 after the Chicago Police Department's Narcotic & Gang Investigations Section (NAGIS) and the Evanston Police Department's Neighborhood Enforcement Team (NET) combined forces to combat an Open Air Drug Market that was operating on the Chicago/Evanston boarder. NAGIS and NET formulated a plan to infiltrate and dismantle this criminal organization.

Through intelligence gathering, and interviews at the start of this mission it was learned that a new faction of the Black P Stones Street Gang was responsible for selling Crack Cocaine in this area. This faction is known as the Insane Black Mafia, and has a membership of approximately 12 to 15 strong. This organization has been known to use, and threaten violence in the area in which they are active. Armed with this information, NAGIS and NET officers focused their energy on the area bounded by Howard on the North, Rogers on the South, Ridge on the West, and Clark on the East.

Undercover officers were deployed in the area and once they established themselves as regular customers, they were able to both, buy up (larger quantities) and introduce other undercover officers into this network.

Once these undercover officers established their street credibility they began to make contact with mid-level dealers. These dealers would supply the officers with their personal cellular telephone numbers in order that the undercover officers could contact them directly for the sole purpose of making future narcotics deals.

During the course of the investigation it became clear that some of the crack cocaine being distributed on the border of Chicago and Evanston was also being distributed by some of Evanston's most notorious street dealers. Acting on this information, the investigation moved further North into Evanston. Once again, undercover officers were deployed into the area and began making street corner buys of narcotics working their way up to mid-level dealers.

During this operation a total of 23 successful undercover buys were made, and 22 narcotics dealers and suppliers were identified. Nineteen arrest warrants were issued for persons who were identified in the delivery of narcotics to the undercover officers. Seizure warrants for four vehicles were also issued.

On the morning of 13 June 07 members of the Chicago Police Department's NAGIS unit and the Evanston Police Department's NET team began rounding up the people named in those arrest warrants. At this time 10 of the nineteen named suspects have been arrested. In the course of this round-up, at one suspect's residence, a substantial quantity of controlled substance was seized as well as several thousands of dollars in cash.

The dedication to duty displayed by the law enforcement officers and members of the States Attorney's office that worked this case demonstrates the level of effectiveness that can be achieved when the Law Enforcement community combines resources to combat a mutual threat to the safety of the communities they serve."

Just want to help you get as much accurate information out there as possible!

So funny. How come no one on this board has anything good to say about this happening? You're all so quick to bury Joe and blame him for everything. Oh wait... Joe's only responsible for bad things happening I forget.

On the morning of the 13th, we observed a force of police, numbering approx. 12 officers in 6 cars, arrive in front of the Northpoint building at 7719-27 N. Paulina. They appeared to be arriving to 'storm' a unit, but after about 5-8 minutes in front of the building (yes, there is serious drug trafficking in and out of the building) they got in their cars and left. Wrong address or.....??? Anyone know details on the shooting in the 7500 block of N. Damen a couple of nights ago. The victim was transported to St. Francis.

The police do not inform the aldermen about undercover operations, so little joe had nothing to do with this success, he will probably take credit for it, I guess he will say he was the first one thru the door to make the arrest,

Working in the US Marshall Office I want to give a tip of the hat to the officers who put their lives in danger for this operation!

My understanding is that only the Chicago and Evanston police were involved in this -- no politicians allowed!

It is nice to see both cities' forces working together, since our challenges are so entertwined.

Of course, this blog is the first place to blame Joe for things that are equally outside his power, but nobody complains about that.

WOW!

I didn't know ANYTHING was outside Joe's power!

BEFORE the election he is SUPERMAN, capable of erecting libraries and field houses and shopping malls WITH HIS BARE HANDS!

AFTER the election, he's a mouse!

Before the election, he was also accused of being able to create goonings and loitering, make Section 8 housing appear and disappear at will, create or destroy business investment at will, and singlehandedly create the condo craze (that incidentally was sweeping the rest of the country at the same time).

A carpenter hires a new assistant who is a (insert ethnic group here). They're building a fence, and he looks down and sees the (ethnic) assistant throwing away about half the nails out of the box. "What are you doing?" asks the carpenter. (Ethnic) assistant says, "half of them have the head on the wrong end."

You see the world as you are, not as it is.

wow gwb!!!

did that joke need the ethnicity part? it could have just been a joke about a dumb assistant, but you couldn't stop from adding the ethnicity part.

way to promote disgusting stereotypes, even if you left out any particular ethnicity.

Shrub,
People don't think the alderman created loitering and "gooning"...they just expect him to take a proactive role in making it stop and actually achieving some results.

Oh, by the way, didn't he warn you not to call it "gooning"? The alderman told me this himself when a group of worried neighbors brought it up to him. Bad PR for the neighborhood, evidently...

Teens and Guns. The police have their hands full. Our community needs more help. This is from today's Chicago Tribune on a Rogers Park shooter:

Teen thought other was an informant, police say

A Chicago teen has been charged with shooting another teen in Evanston because he believed the victim was a police informant.

Lindon Watts, 17, of the 7300 block of North Damen Avenue, was charged Saturday with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm and other gun charges in connection with the shooting in an alley in the 600 block of Howard Street shortly after 3 a.m. Friday, police said. A judge at the Skokie courthouse set bail Monday at $500,000.
Authorities said Watts knew the victim, 17, also from Chicago, and shot him three times because he thought the victim had given police information on Watts' alleged gang activities. The victim was seriously injured in the shooting but was able to tell investigators who shot him, police said. He was in stable condition Monday at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

Police said Watts and 19 others will face additional charges Tuesday in connection with a joint investigation by the Evanston and Chicago Police Departments on drug dealing in both cities.
