Woman Visiting Rogers Park Killed by Car

By Dan P. Blake - Chicago Tribune

A 23-year-old Ohio woman visiting friends in Chicago died after being struck by a car over the weekend on the city's North Side, police said.

Rebecca Hyland of South Euclid, a suburb of Cleveland, was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Impala around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 6800 block of North Sheridan Road during a rainstorm, police said. Hyland was a recent graduate of Loyola University Chicago, police said.

She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she died about 11:45 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The woman was crossing against the light in a crosswalk on Sheridan when the northbound Impala hit her, Officer Amina Greer said. The driver, Jonathan Long of the 1500 block of West Juneway Terrace, was cited for failure to reduce speed and not having insurance, Greer said.

"She stepped out into the street and he struck her," Greer said.

Police said Hyland may have run into the street to hail a taxi.

I feel very, very bad for that woman.

Yes, Sheridan Road is an absolute death trap for a pedestrian and needs "traffic calming", which should take the form of lowering the speed limit.

You can't even count on people stopping on the red- don't take it for granted that just because you have the WALK light that you can proceed blithely across the intersetion. People are forever speeding up to the white line and rolling 5' past it, right in front of pedestrians who are attempting to cross on the WALK light.

Don't EVER cross against the light, no matter how far away the nearest car looks to be. Remember he is likely traveling very fast, fast enough to enter your line of sight too quickly for you to respond.

Let's get some traffic-calming on this dangerous road NOW.

For the record. In April, when Joe Moore was making his "I foiled a purse snatching" tour, he stopped by CAPS beat 2423.

It was brought to his attention, the very terrible conditions with traffic on Sheridan Road.

100 days and two deaths later, Joe Moore has yet to respond to this issue.

Hey Craig....just turned on the scanner (10:20 pm/Monday). You have a clue what's going on? Cops in 20 told to take their lunchs....cops in 24 told to get their helmets and protective gear...and someones calling for wagons. Riot somewhere, or what. Just wondering if you knew....thanks.

Where is Joe lately, btw?

Good-morning Robin, There was a shooting on the west side last night. Yes, a near riot broke out afterwards and extra police from other districts were called in.

You'll see this covered all over the news this morning, afternoon and night. Maybe even on Wednesday?

Here's the run-down. A few community do-gooders were hanging out in front of a mini-mart. Just doing nothing.

They saw the cops pull up and for some strange reason. The goodie-two-shoes ran away being afraid for their lives. The police said one had a gun and got shot, allegedly in the back. He died.

The community of neighbors came out and protested the shooting, saying the cops was all wrong for shooting such a fine up-standing young man of the community, who was hanging out with his chess team doing nothing.

This is terrible news. I just found out about this yesterday. I went to school with Rebecca and my heart and prayers go out to her close friends and family. This is such a senseless accident. Motorists need to be more aware. Such wasted potential because someone wasn't paying attention.
