Let's praise the police today. Yesterday at 1:54 PM, a 24th district police officer took chase with an alleged bank robber in Rogers Park. The robber was described as a male/white, about 5 foot 8 inches tall, 150 pounds. The foot chase began at Jarvis and Sheridan - and ended a minute later at Sherwin and Sheridan. It was fast. It was quick. And the police got their man. By 1:55 PM, the perp was in custody.
Well done, I say. This officer garners the
"foot chase of the day" award.

And thank you officer!!
Great work by Rogers Park's finest!!
He wanted some of that bailout money. I don't blame him.
Great job CPD and to that Officer; Thank You!!
Good job to the 24th district coppers!
BTW, which bank and when?
Unanswered questions the scanner communication didn't provide while I was dialed in. Only someone who has access to the police reports on file can find that out now.
But believe me, I heard the officer breathing heavy while talking on the radio and chasing the perp. This officer has some mad skills. He's a keeper.
LOL. The robber must be a smoker or he met the one Chicago cop who is also a world-class sprinter.
Great police work!
But I have a little feeling that our police are going to get a LOT of great workouts chasing bank robbers in the near future. This seems to be the crime of choice for white-collar guys whose economic falls have turned them into desperados, and I expect their numbers to increase sharply as this recession grinds on and deepens.
looks like it was a high pofile bank robber: http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/01/fbi-nabs-suspected-45-second-bandit.html
Man on the Street, I guess you have never heard of the Chicago Police Running Club. We regularly compete in various races including the Chicago Marathon.
A Rogers Park man who may be responsible for more than ten bank robberies in Chicago and surrounding suburbs was arrested on the North Side Thursday night after a foot chase and physical altercation with arresting officers.
Andrew Johnson, who last lived at 1335 W. Fargo Ave., was arrested and charged with one count of bank robbery after his Thursday night arrest, according to an FBI release. He was charged Friday in the Nov. 24, 2008 robbery of a Bank of America branch at 5466 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Big daddy...
Im not disparaging the athletic abilities of police. In fact I write for another website and just made mention of the police hockey league. I'm just saying this guy was caught so quickly that he must have been chased by a sprinter, which is different that a marathon runner....
In addition, when I worked for a newspaper I interviewed a famous bodybuilder who used to be (or still was) a chicago cop. I forget his name though...
I believe that this jerk was the "45 second bandit" who had a countdown for all his robberies & ended them at the 45 second mark thinking he wouldn't get caught if he got out of the bank that quickly.
Sergio Oliva is now retired and not in very good health.
Sergio Oliva was a monster of a bodybuilder. I remember him. Multi-championship title holder. Huge and ripped. Big muscles layered on even bigger muscles.
A Chicago Policemen, huh? Learn something everyday here on the Broken Heart.
I wish him well.
From the little I knew him, Sergio Olivia was a really good cop and guy...worked out of the 24th. He and his wife ran a gym on Rogers Avenue across from Pottawattamie Park...the building is now loft condos. I too wish him well.
Sergio retired a couple of years ago. He had the misfortune of getting his squad stolen at Devon & Kedzie 3 or 4 years ago. The guy then crashed it at Western & Pratt. I'm suprised that the blog miester never saw him hanging on Morse. Sergio used to have an Excalibur knock off that was always seen there. He traded it in for a pimped out Caddie.
Well done indeed!!!
This reminds me of two movies: Dog Day Afternoon and Crying Game. Don't make me explain that.
