Tuesday with Timmy

Hi Craig, this week has been one of the most non-violent (with the exception of Monday) weeks I've seen at Sullivan since September. That's good to see.

January 13: On Tuesday, we went on a field trip to the Muesum of Surgical Science. It was pretty nice. When I got back to school, though, I saw a paddy wagon parked out in front. Probably to break up more fights/take kids in.

January 14: On Wednesday, it was actually quite calm. Other than the loudness (wasn't actually too loud) at times and possibly one fight, it was calm, so that was good to see.

January 15: On Thursday, things were very calm for some reason (good thing though). I observed no altercations/fights whatsoever.

January 16: On Friday, nothing much was going on. There were some altercations and possibly a fight or two (little fights at it), but nothing too major. Glad it's TGIF, though.

- Thanks,
Avondale/Logan Square Crime Blotter

Weekly field trips.
Not bad, I wish we had that back in the 60s!
I'm so old.

I live around the 6000 block of Lakewood Ave. and there's been extensive digging in the front yards of buildings, holes have been marked off with orange cones. It's a huge mess everywhere. Do you have any advice on where I can find out who is doing this digging and why?

I'll send out an email or two and see what I can find out.

Hawkeye, I'll bet it's AT&T setting up its U-Verse service.
I know there's a U-Verse box setup on Thome, just west of Glenwood, on the south side of the street.

It sure would be nice to hear about the students who are good. Next week why don't you write about the hundreds of kids at your school who work hard and follow the rules. You can't be the only one.

I'm certain there are plenty of students who need a positive shout out from you for doing the right thing.

If all you look at is the bad and never the good what are you learning?

sammys: I'm trying my best to find students who are good and write about them. That's real hard to find, though (ironic to me because there's only about 900 kids at Sullivan). However, I know of a few good people and I'll give them a shout out next week. I'm certainly not the only one following rules.

By the way, I've wrote about some good. That's why you hardly see a description for Thursday and Friday because there wasn't a lot of badness going on. I actually saw good behavior. And if I were to focus on bad all the time, you guys would see much longer descriptions then what you see now.

But sammys, the purpose of this blog isn't to point out the good, it's to highlight and complain incessantly about the bad while doing nothing to stop it. Haven't you learned that yet?

Yahoo: Are you talking to me (about the stuff at school) or Craig (about his blog)? Because if you're talking to me, it isn't my job to do something about what bad stuff goes on at school. That's the school's job. My job at school is to learn, do good stuff, etc.

You are very lucky in your life to have had the benefit of some seriously committed adults who have made you strong.

Though you may have disabilities, I can honestly say from the strength of your writing, you are no dummy.

That being said, I do feel that you need to take a pause and reflect upon everyone who isn't as lucky to have what you obviously have in your life. And though you may be disabled, you certainly have abilities other non-disabled people have yet to grasp.

I think you do a great disservice to yourself and your community (i.e. your school) by playing down your school.

Even if 25% of the student body are trouble makers, there is 75% that are not. Don't you think that the 75% should be worthy of some praise on a regular basis as the 25% (my estimate) that is disruptive and disrespectful?

Don't let yourself get sucked down the hole of negativism.

And even for some of the school's troublemakers, some of them will eventually pull themselves together and become productive people as they move beyond their highschool years.

It's easy to stand in judgement of others. You wouldn't have gotten as far as you have in live if there weren't positive people around you. You now have the chance to be a positive person for the sake of others. Pass it on.

Well, not all of that is true. Sometimes I've had to help myself become a better person.

You all see that I'm a good kid, right? I sure wasn't like this at this time last year. At my last school, I was nearly always involved in mischief (not that I always started some incidents).

I think about people who don't have alot all the time and I have tried several times to help some of those people.

I do not feel as if I'm doing a "great disservice" to myself or anybody else. Everyone knows about Sullivan's problems and I'm doing the right thing (hopefully) by writing to Craig every week about what I see and I've been told several times staff from my school read what I post and they're doing things to stop the nonsense.

I'm not letting myself get sucked into that negative stuff. Most of the time I can be seen smiling or laughing with friends or teachers and working hard on assignments and tests.

I'll have a follow-up comment to this later, but I have to leave now.

Here's my follow up comment to sammys:
I surely hope some of the bad students pull theirselves together because I'm tired of going to a school full of violence and disruption.

On that note, I'm going to continue to be positive and I'll pass it on, but if there's incidents and other stuff, I'm still writing about it.

As for the 25%/75% thing, I doubt that, because in my (and almost everyone else's opinion), at least 50% of these kids are trouble makers and the other 50% are good (and I'll note them in my next post).

sammys said...

If at least 50% are good, you should at least be supportive of them.

And 50% which are trouble makers probably are not making trouble 100% of the time either.

And maybe if people were more positive about the school some of the trouble makers would not be so troubled. Act like you care and others do feel it.

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

I am supportive of them. Just because you don't see anything written about them doesn't mean that I'm not supporting them. Quite frankly, you guys should feel honored that the good kids aren't written about. At least they're not causing mayhem all hours of the day at school.

I find it odd how some of you folks comment on Sullivan that's it a "real positive" school and "there is lots of good kids there". You don't know what it's like to be there 8 hours a day. You come to Sullivan one day and tell me how good of a school you think it is. It's not some school with a bunch of angels in it. Not at all.

How can you positive about a school that has violence going on nearly every minute of each single day? Believe me, I try my best to be positive, but every time I think we're going to have a day without violence or chaos, I'm proven wrong. And you can't say I don't care because I do.

If you want so much positive stuff, write about it yourself. I'm not covering up for my school. The violence/chaos will be written about until it stops and if you don't like it, so be it.

I'll leave it up to Craig to tell you the purpose of this blog if you want to know.

Avondale,

I agree with you 100%! First off, angels and sunny days do not make the news... it's the crap that happens around us that does.

Keep up the good work!
