4:06 PM: About 50 males are gathering on Howard by Paulina, and according to police... Wait..... Shots were just fired right in front of their eyes. Lot's of shots fired. They're just shooting at each other like crazied idiots. Police are calling this out as shots fired. Calling for all back-up, including Evanston. These are non-locals coming to the area to start a massive shoot-out on Howard Street. Good lord, help us. (Live blogging)
4:11 PM: Male/black, wearing all green, was the alleged shooter.
4:11 PM: Now we got shots fired at 1742 West Juneway from Evanston One.
4:12 PM: News crews are now up here shooting video.
4:15 PM: Bullet holes in a laundry mat window, 7658 North Paulina. Evanston One has a person stopped in all green on Juneway and Clark.
4:17 PM: Still no sign of the Chicago Journal News-Star reporter or the reporter for the Joe Moore News Agency. I can't tell you if the blue light camera is working or not.
4:23 PM: A realtor is trying to show a condo in the 7600 block of North Bosworth.
4:28 PM: Large crowd is gathering west of Clark, on Howard. CAPS beat 2424. Looks like this may be starting up again.
Blognotes - 4:38 PM: Though-out this whole bit of madness, I haven't heard of a single person getting arrested for mob-action. That answers a lots of questions on why crime is down. This whole thing never happened. Any of you paid reporters, who have access to the files, go check the radio/dispatch recordings. Start at about 4:00 PM. You'll hear/read the first responding officer radioing dispatch, knowing trouble was brewing. But he just watched as it situation escalated to shots fired. Other officers were told to keep distance from the growing mob on each side of the Howard. Like I said, it should all be on the tapes.
5:54 PM: Gang dispersal. Police are dispersing five at 1447 West Morse. Event number is 14574.
6:00 PM: Why didn't the first responding officer give a 50 person gang dispersal at Howard and Marshfield 2 minutes before the actual shooting he radioed in on Howard went down?
6:01 PM: Why didn't the blue light cameras prevent this shooting on Howard and Paulina from happening?
7:21 PM: Police are having problems with their PDT's. This is an on-going problem.

Yes, I'm sitting here at the computer this afternoon, in the vicinity of Chase and Sheridan. There have been pretty constant sirens heading north, toward Howard.
I can't wait until I am out of this dump!!!!
Good luck selling your condo!
Damn. That's horrible. Hope the citizens up there are okay, including you, Grammar Gal. I also hope that these 50 males are arrested when and if they're called.
I meant caught instead of called on my last post, LOL.
They can be 'called' on it too, Avondale. Someone (OUR DEAR MAYOR?) has to 'Call Foul' on the gangs--and do it NOW, before summer.
The proposed Gun Laws will do NOTHING to prevent these situations. Perhaps "Search and Seizure' would?
It's time to GET TOUGH ON GANGS!
And thanks, Tim, for your concern--I really appreciate that! Keep up with school and you great work outside of school!
"4:23 PM: A realtor is trying to show a condo in the 7600 block of North Bosworth"
an OPTIMIST!!
That's right, GG. They can be called on it as well. And yes, it's time to get tough on gangs.
Rogers Park Vigilence (sic):
Sarcasm is not need when citizens of Rogers Park (and other areas) may be in the path of danger.
Though you 'look' like George Michael in the 80s, I'm sure your true visage is not similar at all.
Thank you, Craig, for YOUR vigilance and minute-by-minute reporting. Too bad some of these jerks don't appreciate what you, and others, do for Rogers Park.
And, a belated thanks for finding 'Avondale'. His reports are becoming more important as the year progresses.
Keep up the good work (I would try, but have no scanner!)
Personally, I thought RPV's comment was pretty funny in a black comedy kind of way.
Hey GG, when you're done with your personal attack on me, can you add anything constructive? Sheesh...
Laughter sometimes is all that is left after we scream, cry, yell, agonize, complain and suffer...and it's welcomed.
Now continue grazing...
You gotta wonder what the neighbors who live near Howard think?
And readers North of Howard? How you feeling today? Are you angry? Mad? Are you outraged?
Personally, I thought RPV's comment was pretty funny in a black comedy kind of way.
In some circles, sarcasm will get you everywhere.
Or is this just ho-hum, no big deal. Just an isolated incident.
Craig,
I don't know if you know anyone along Howard but it might be worth it on your next trip to ask people wandering the streets their thoughts. I'm curious.
Yep, is that why the police don't get involved? so they don't have to show it in their numbers? Does Joe and his crew read your blog? Joe! pay attention!! Get the punks under control!
I just read about this today (Monday morning). Any response/statement from the Alderman? I mean guys just shooting at each other in front of police without a care in the world. This kind of blatant action deserves SOME kind of response, doesn't it. Or am i wrong.
Like I said, It's going to be a cruel summer. Maybe one of the worse so far.
===Like I said, It's going to be a cruel summer. Maybe one of the worse so far.===
You're right. There's still not enough kooks like me screaming up and down like a wild maniac to do something.
There's still not enough public pressure. Until that happens, so will the urban gang/terrorist war in Rogers Park.
In answer to the question, I'M OUTRAGED. I'm not on Howard but that makes no difference. The ward should be outraged.
Most people are oblivious to the crime and gang activity. If this blog were mandatory reading there would be wide spread outrage.
I live North of Howard, and I can tell you I am sick and tired of this shit.
I watched the news this morning and saw there was a meeting on the south side with various officals at an aldermans office because a CPS student was killed over the weekend. This meeting included news crew coverage.
We had a young man killed at the Jarvis Street el a few months ago, nothing from our alderman yet. Where was our news coverage? Why isn't our alderman on the news fighting to save his constituents lives, instead of worrying about a goose or a big box store that is never going to open in Rogers Park anyway? He completely ignores the mess he has helped create here and acts like it doesn't exist.
For the first time in at least 2 years, the alderman was at the last CAPS meeting, coincidentally when the new police Commander was attending. His staff member Alicia was there also. She hasn't been to a CAPS meeting for months. Do we have to invite the Commander to every monthly CAPS meeting to get cooperation from our alderman and his staff?
At the CAPS meetings, residents are encouraged to walk the streets to take our neighborhood back. Do some positive loitering. Walk your dog...take the kids out. Go to the park. Really?! You want me to get shot? Apparently it's not even safe to go to the corner laundromat NOH. And remember, that is the only laundromat left in this area. The laundromat on Howard Street closed months ago...another business lost on Howard Street. (And this was before the economy tanked..so don't give me that line about it being bad everywhere.)
Howard Street has been one miserable mess for the 8 years I have lived here. It's one broken promise after another. But according to the email blasts from Joe, he has it under control.
Today I saw one of his developer buddies has taken the sign down announcing a condo and retail building on Howard Street. The sign has been up for at least 2 years without any sign of work. Today the sign is gone...I guess that's another broken promise for Howard Street and more vacant boarded up buildings to look at.
I would call the aldermans office and ask what he is doing about this mess NOH, but it is always the same. If you get to talk to someone, they act like you are the problem and you are interrupting their busy day. If you leave a voice mail message, if they call you back they never have an answer. If you email the alderman directly, he'll reply and ask what you are doing to solve the problems.
Hint Mr alderman....I don't get paid over $100,000 a year to solve the problems of this ward...you do.
You helped create this mess, you need to get it cleaned up.
Well, even if we get no responses or the standard "crime is down" responses from the Alderman's office, we need to continue to email and call. They don't reply to me either or I get one of their form responses - however, still important to keep sending them. Moore sends out these emails on his big initiatives - how about sending one out when there is crime? That's what the people really care about. I would love to trail him for a week and see what he really does do on a daily basis.
