Rev. Marilyn Pagan-Banks Defends "Pay-to-Play" in the 49th Ward

Can I get an Amen?

Boy, you know you've hit a nerve when the religious leaders go on the attack against you.
Rev. Marilyn Pagan-Banks said...> "Bad-mouthing alderman and community members that are working to better the 49th ward does not make Craig an activist...just a man in need of prayer and a purpose. I don't believe I was even on the committee yet when this decision was made. However, I do know that the committee does not rubber stamp, but reflects on, discusses and reviews each request with integrity. Not liking Joe Moore, your neighborhood or your own life, gives no one the right to lash out and degrade other people. Like Ghandi said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." but is it really change you want...otherwise what else would you do with your life...? Ms. Marin don't fall victim to the hype! If you need some real news, call me."
If you were a Reverend, what would be more important to discuss? Quoting Gandhi and pontificating on my future in the same sentence -- or youth on youth crime on your own block?

You'd think there would be much more important things on the Reverends plate? Like her worrying about the 10 shots fired on her street, Sunday afternoon. Yes, Carol, call the Reverend. Ask her what's she doing to stop the youth gang violence, shootings and drug dealers that's on her own block.

Who asked her?

Did Joe have to scramble to find a self-righteous "religious leader" to act as a distraction?

Did the good Reverend make any statement at all regarding that shooting?

Has she ever made any statements regarding the incredible violence and mayhem in this area?

If she did, point us to it.

I think she needs stay out of it. I believe in God and everything, but she's got no place to make those kinds of remarks. You're doing a great job in keeping Rogers Park informed, Craig, and she's just mad because you're telling the truth about Joe Moore.

Progun's comment is right on in my opinion and is my main criticism of the Adelphi issue.

To Zulac,

Ok I will ask one question how did you miss the lien for un-paid child support.

Seems Bill found it pretty quickly.
Maybe he could join ZULAC as a researcher.

All I ask is research then reflect on the developers ability to complete a 10 million dollar project.
After all it was a one of a kind theatre that we lost.
In my opinion a run down theatre is more valuable than a hole in the ground.

Also the developers were not interested in any green technology only in ROI and profit margin.

I am questioning your ability based on the decisions made and the results seen so far.

How many times do we see scab developers in the ward vs good paying union jobs?

No, we can't go back and know what is known now and hindsight is 20/20, but hopefully going forward they will do their due diligence on such matters.

It really hurts because that place could have been something other than a vacant lot- historic building and all that. The plans looked good - I agree- but the developer was a dirtbag we now know.

It's interesting how the Zulac members (that have commented online)just seem to accept contributions as business as usual. That is exactly the point! Yes one can argue that contributions don't guarantee the zoning change, but one wonders...will you get consideration WITHOUT a contribution. That is inherently a corrupt system no matter what kind of face they try to paint on it. And that's not just our Alderman, it's the whole lot of 'em.

I've lived in Chicago for about 10 years now and I am totally confused about the way things work around here.
As a PART-TIME employee of the state, I need to complete a course on ethics, what's okay and what's not okay. How is it that I cannot take almost ANY gift from someone else, but Moore and the other aldermen and politicos around the state can take an almost unlimited amount of gifts.
If I create a "election fund", can I then take as many "gifts" as I want?

Pagan is to Ghandi as a thorn is to a ________. No connection.

She's embedded herself in groups, held 'aldermanic forums' that were as slanted as the Rockies. The woman attends meetings and has done her more than her fair share of attacking and dividing. I recall former Cmdr. Rottner telling her he didn't take orders from her at her so-called 'meet the commander' gospel fest. She's relatively intolerant of other faiths, so how charitable is that?

It might behoove this woman to clean her own front steps, back steps and the whole house before asking Carol Marin to call her for news.

Edgewater, you know that joey made a call to the good Reverend & told to to come out and make comments to make Craig look like some smuck, so joey can be sen as a aldermen who care about the ward.

Look I see a black SUV driving toward RP, with some men with warrants in their hand!!

Jocelyn,

"Yes one can argue that contributions don't guarantee the zoning change, but one wonders...will you get consideration WITHOUT a contribution."

In all of my time in Rogers Park, I have not seen one zoning change by Joe Moore without a campaign contribution within a few weeks or even days before it's acceptance.

What I DID experience though, was Joe Moore telling me that the Adelphi Theater would not be saved without a campaign contribution or cash in an envelope.

I met with Joe a total of 34 times during the renovation of the Adelphi Theater, the attempt to purchase the Adelphi Theater and the fight to save the Adelphi Theater from demolition.

Every time he demanded money in exchange for his support.

I told him that we did our research and Chad Zuric owes quite a bit of money in back child support and is on shakey ground financially. I told him that I found a trail of past disolved corporations by Chad Zuric that led to many unfinished projects and foreclosures.

Everytime, he held out his hand and said "Show me the money" or "give me the money". He even handed me an empty white envelope for me to fill one time.

I informed Joe Moore that Chad Zuric could not complete the project:

BEFORE the community meetings,

BEFORE the bribery,

Before the rezoning,

BEFORE the demolition of the Adelphi Theater,

BEFORE the property went into foreclosure,

BEFORE the Adelphi Theater became a dangerous unsecure hole with a 20 foot drop.

Joe Moore chose to fund his re-election campaign instead of acting in the best interest of our community.

One more important fact to point out is that I chose not to pay Joe Moore, and the beautiful Art Deco theater that I was worked for two years to restore got demolished.

Craig Gernhardt said...

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there at least 1000 signatures on a petition to save the theatre before Joe and Chad tore it down and replaced it with a hole in the ground?

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Morse Theatre @ 1338 West Morse full of warts before it was saved by restoration?

Just saying.

I'm totally blasted in this weeks Joe Moore Newspaper too. Pick up a copy and enjoy. I did.

Alderman Moore having the Aldelphi torn down in exchange for $14,500 is like murdering a man to steal his shoes.

What a senseless of act violence that was.

Though a relative new-comer to Rogers Park, I have spent many hours researching the neighborhood, and many more hours analyzing Joe Moore's D-2 Contributions lists.

If more residents took the time, and did the cross-referencing, they too would begin to see the obvious 'Pay-to-Play' pattern Joe Moore has been utilizing for the past (at least) 3-4 years.

When did you bow to corruption and turn so dirty, Joe? Does it give your ego a boost to lie to your constituents of the 49th Ward?

DID YOU CONSIDER IT A VICTORY WHEN THE ADELPHI THEATER WAS DESTROYED?

What a complete arse, as theaters across America have been being restored, sometimes over long periods of time by volunteers, but restored anyway, through strength and courage and downright GRIT of people who want the HISTORY OF THEIR COMMUNITY to not be forgotten.

THROW DA BUM OUT!

Bill, you should go to the state's attorney or feds with that story.

With all due respect Bill, are you saying your attempt to secure/own the Adelphi Theatre failed because you never gave Joe a campaign contribution?

The problem is that it likely never made sense on paper. What were your projected costs to rehab the place and what were you projected operating expenses? Exactly how much money (real money with contracts) did you have raised to accomplish this deal?

Trust me I wish....really wish you had been successful at pulling this off, but you can't spend the rest of your life blaming the Alderman (any alderman) for this deal not happening.

This is not exactly the kind of thing people say off the cuff on a community blog Bill.

I call your bluff.

If it really was true I would have to believe you would have gone to the SA with this.

So Joe had you marked as a man with deep pockets huh?

Bill and Craig - thanks!!! That's a mighty strange statement from a Reverand - what in the world kind of church does she have?
The whole Joe Moore story has all the dots connecting - the man obviously did not listen to anyone else or do due diligence before he had the theatre torn down. And on the news show they had the office of the construction company listed as a home in Wicker Park - what?

Craig - no reason to be mad at you - if the supposed leader of our community was doing his real job - he would have no problems.

The fact is she doesn't have a church. She is the Executive Director of the Good News Soup Kitchen that shares space with the Good News Church. The Soup Kitchen separated from the church in the 90's. Rev. P was never more than a part time pastor for the church and finally stepped down 9some would say she was asked to step down) roughly two years ago. To my knowledge she does not work for any specific church.

Just thought you'd want to know.

- PEACE -

She's doing a half Frankenstein.

Good News Partners...is this the same church that owns an apartment building at 7645-47 N Bosworth? If so, they better get a building permit posted for the construction they are doing on a 3rd floor apartment in this building.

And perhaps they need a building permit for the work they are doing on the garage behind their building on Jonquil Terrace at Greenview.

Craig,

It would have been much better if you would have mentioned that since he owes back child support he had to have lied on the economic disclosure statement he completed to get the zoning change. That is perjury, according to the form. The back child support is probably the reason it's in foreclosure - he couldn't pre-sell to get the money to build.

Missed a golden opportunity.

For the record, Bill didn't do research and find out about the child support, the IDPA contacted him on his save the Adelphi website and asked what Zuric's interest was in the property as they were doing an asset search.

You can't "find out" this stuff until a lawsuit has been filed.

Not defending ZULAC, just getting facts straight.

More "news organizations" afraid to actually tell the news - sad, isn't it? And they wonder why this crap still goes on.......

Well I tried - Chi-Town Daily News wouldn't do it, Pioneer Press wouldn't and neither would the Chicago Journal......until we get a real press corps - count on this going on for-ev-er!

I do get a kick out of the fact that Joe didn't send out one of his big email blasts promoting himself on television, especially a major channel!!
