* Family Member Says 'Choir Boy' Not Known to Carry Guns

But the Photos Claim a Different Story

Reader 'Big Daddy' asked for this story.
By Lolly Bowean - Chicago Tribune reporter
August 24, 2008

A teenager was shot to death on the South Side by a Chicago police officer on Friday night after a confrontation, police said.

Martinez Winford, 16, was shot about 7:45 p.m., police said, and taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 8:34 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

"He was a good kid . . . he just needed a little guidance," said his cousin, Frederick Arnold. "He fell behind the wrong crowd and he just did some wrong things. But we all make mistakes, and he didn't deserve for the Chicago police to take his life. He didn't deserve it . . . he was just a regular kid."

Although police said they found a gun nearby, Arnold said Winford was not known to carry a weapon.
Maybe Frederick should get to know the rest of his cousins a little better. He was all wrong about Martinez "lil Tinez" Winford!

Thank You. All I ask from the newsmedia is honesty and objectivity, things we rarely see here. They continue to report in such a manner that would leave one thinking that the police murdered this young man in cold blood. Nothing could be further from the truth. They portrayed this boy as an innocent little child. They interview family members who have an obvious agenda and who stated that this kid would never use or possess guns, a statement that is obviously untrue. They did not use those pictures when the story first ran, pictures that would show another side to this young man that some don't want the rest of us to see. But it doesn't end here. In the story involving the police related shooting in the 017th district, the next morning I put the news on and was told that " the Police gunned down a man for running away". What an absolute bald faced lie, a lie Channel Nine knew was a lie and yet they went ahead with it anyway. What they should have said was that " the Police shot and killed a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history who fired at the Police when he exited the car that he had taken moments before in a car jacking". At least that would be a more truthful portrayal of what really happened. But they don't report in such a manner. They slant the news to garner ratings, usually at our expense. But anyway, thanks for giving your bloggers a glimpse of what really goes on out there and how they do not get the whole story.

I agree big daddy. While I understand the family lost a child, just once I would like to see them admit, "well, yeah, he was in a gang and I found a gun in his room one time and we did wonder where he got the money for the new shoes and shirts, so I guess this was inevitable."

Instead we get one more "innocent good kid" shot. A good kid who carried a gun. Is anyone shot by the police ever guilty of anything?

i got into a big fight with someone about this subject.. i told him i am tired of seen the community outrage because the police killed an "innocent young black man"...okay FIRST OF. everybody in the community knew that he was a gangbanger and im pretty sure they knew his reputation...SECOND.. why dont they react the same way when an innocent bystander gets shot or killed by a gangbanger??? they all stay quiet with their mouth shut and pretend they dont know anything but when a police officer shoots a known gangbanger then the community gets angry and they start making a big deal of out if. if they really want to make their neighborhood a safe place to live on without worrying about gettng shot then they should do vice versa and they ll be surprise on how the community changes over time..keep making a voice for the gangbangers and then they wonder why the neighborhood is infested with gangbangers

Glad no officers were hurt.

Glad the offender is dead.

Now can we get back to the issues in RP like the Tom Tom club photoshop classes.

Big Daddy,

There are some deep discounted properties in RP. ie great time to buy.

If your wife still insist on the reality of the neighborhood that keeps you from buying then bring her by our house and let her see some of the ways we cope with raising a family in RP.

16 is too young but the cops did the right thing. The proper lefty response is more/better/stricter handgun laws but how could that possibly have changed this scenario. Where are the teens getting the guns and would this happen in European city??

Agree about the big discounts in RP. Will be closing on a place next week on Greenleaf at 20% less than it was listed in April. Plus developer is paying all my closing costs. Finally the RP crime discount I was waiting for!! Now watch housing prices drop another 20% next year...ugh!!!

It is the mentality of the "oppressed", they continue the cycle by not taking responsibility for their part. Until you accept your part nothing in your life will ever change.

Obviously it is too much for this family to look at their part in 'choir boys' demise @ this time. It is so much easier to point the finger and assign blame.

Blah, blah, blah. Well, he got a little guidance, cuzen Fred. The cops guided a cap up his skinny little ass.

Chip Bagg and Anomadic.1...you are both insensitive jerks. A young person has died. You did not walk a day in his shoes. Apparently you are both too closed-minded to realize, but an individual is a product of his or her environment. Save the stones for when you are without fault.
