* Hate Crime Near Loyola University

The Tribune reports the Chicago police are conducting a hate crime investigation this morning after a 22-year-old man reported he was attacked because of his sexual orientation on the city's North Side overnight. The incident occurred while the man was walking in the 6700 block of Sheridan Road near Loyola University Chicago just after 1 a.m. and was confronted by three men, according to Rogers Park District police. The men exchanged words, with the group calling the man a derogatory anti-gay term, Lt. Ken Barnas said.

BLOGNOTES: No need to contact Joe Moore about this matter, I already know what he'll say. He'll just tell us this is a isolated incident and crime is down. And I'm not even going to bother contacting Loyola on what they are doing to alert students on this matter.

Well I'm glad the dude wasn't beat up physically. The name calling doesn't surprise me as a friend of mine has endured this twice in this area. It's sad when you have to warn friends or family visiting to keep your eyes open coming through this fine neighborhood.

He was physically hurt. He got punched in the face. He was taken to the hospital. He received stitches.

hey dumbass craig, student don't even return to campus until next week. so quit being such a hater. it gets old.

obviously if he's a student, he was an off campus student. and speaking as a loyola alum, loyola would constantly barage students will information about keeping us safe and safety alerts.

Hey Craig. Thanks for posting this important news item. We would never hear about it, if it were not for you.

Years ago a Loyola student was attached in her front hallway as she was returning home. She was slashed and left for dead. Miraculously she survived. Because the police had a lead on the perp Loyola University was asked NOT to announce this crime. Too bad said Loyola and the story made big news. And guess what else, they never found the perp.
Loyola is such a cooperative (NOT)
organization.

Regarding the HATE CRIME
It is an embarassment on this entire community.
Cant we all just get along. Why can't there be peace, love and understanding. Just give peace a chance. Live and let live. Come on everyone smile on your brother.

First of all, I was bombarded with safety emails almost weekly as a loyola on-campus student, so lay off that, and 80% of the student aren't even here yet, like jarvis said. AND just because it happens "near loyola" doesn't mean shit

and craig, i cant agree with jarvis more - if you're going report then report, but stop COMPLAINING all the time (but hey I read your stuff about once a week so go figure, but i do it for the facts and then tune out the complaining and JOE MOORE or nathan or Loyola or whoever else is on your shit list, i mean i want to keep reading but man it gets so redundant and annoying)

He isn't a dumbass for saying that. Even if students haven't officially started classes, that doesn't mean that Loyola is a ghost town absent of human life. And what does it matter if he was an on or off campus student? A lot of them live in apartments in the immediate area, and the university should be equally as concerned about their safety. Also, students are there all year round, and I've seen groups of students around the area on orientations, etc. That, and a lot are most likely moving in right now.

Anyway, I just called District 24 and still no sketches or description. Don't think there will be any released because they have so little info to go on.

Damn shame. . .in addition to other crimes in the area, now it appears we have gay bashing to deal with as well. It is disturbing considering there is a growing gay population in RP.

All of us are potential victims of violence. Some of us are more likely than others to be a target. I read about this targeted attack in the Chicago Tribune, however, others may not have. So it makes sense to share information here. I prefer to know WHAT is going on and WHERE.

I hate crime near Loyola too!! I don't know anyone who likes crime, unless your a criminal. But even they sometimes hate crime too.

We were once in a car and had to slam on the brakes because the light turned red. Well this man behind us thought we were going to go through the light and he would follow behind. Well, of course once we stopped, he had to stop. He called my dad a fag when the light turned green and he gunned his car past us. I didn't know what a fag was, so my dad said it wasn't a nice thing to say to people. The next day on the playground, I was being bothered by some kids so I called them a bunch a fags.

Well you know what happened next... I got beat up.

I didn't know then but I know now that people hate to be called that and sometime people who get called hateful things commit hate crimes.

I recently moved to Rogers Park from suburban Denver. Let me tell you compared to Denver, Rogers Park is affordable. I think its pretty clean too. As for gangs, drugs, crime. It's everywhere. Hey, why doesn't the guy take some personal responsibility for being out at 1 in the morning. He should have taken a cab.

IrishPirate said...

Well Willy it is Denver's loss that you moved here.

You are a genius.

Yea, he absolutely needs to take responsibility for being out at 1am.

How dare he?

He was inviting those cowardly pieces of human turds to attack him.

You are an eejit.

You will probably vote for Moore next time.

Willy Lohman, that is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard.

Being out at 1 in the morning is NOT something you should have to "take personal resposibility for".

It is not the same as running up bills you cant pay or having 16 kids on welfare or getting addicted to drugs or COMMITTING A VIOLENT CRIME.

I have worked jobs that required me to be on the streets at 1, 2, 3 AM.

More than that, a measure of how viable a city is, is how late you can be out and what kind of night life the place has. I am used to 24/7 neighborhoods- my benchmark of a decent city.

In order for a city to be a good place, people need to be able to walk and take a train or bus at any hour. That is my yardstick of civilization. A cab ride at $15 a pop is not an option for most people.

You're talking like a typical victim-blamer, and victim-blaming has given great encouragement to the criminal element in this country.

Nobody said this was a Loyola student

Seems like the only person anyone got details on this from is the victim. I wonder if an impartial witness might have mentioned if he called his attackers anything "mean"

Not that I don't believe him, but does a person simply have to say they were called a "fag" while they were assaulted and that elevates it to a hate crime, which apparently gives it more media attention?

Hate crimes are stupid.

Mr. Willy says,

"Hey, why doesn't the guy take some personal responsibility for being out at 1 in the morning. He should have taken a cab."

Willy I think the change in altitude has wrecked havoc on your senses! That's like saying women who dress sexy are asking to be raped..c'mon now, you really can't be serious?

well welcome to the world women face we get attacked because of our sexual orientation daily.

---obviously if he's a student, he was an off campus student. and speaking as a loyola alum, loyola would constantly barage students will information about keeping us safe and safety alerts.---

And the fact that such information dispersal is necessary is in itself a symptom of a bigger problem.

Though as from Denver said, this stuff happens in other places. No need to act like it somehow makes us particularly evil.
