A 'Broken Heart' Exclusive
Tonight at 9:20 p.m., a gas leak forced the evacuation of the 1200 and 1300 blocks of West Morse Avenue. Sources close to the investigation say the leak may have occurred due to the single family home that was torn down a day earlier, possibly rupturing a gas-line. Hazardous Materials Unit (Haz-Mat) has been called in. As of blog-time, Morse Avenue is still shut down and traffic is being diverted to Pratt.
BLOGNOTES: So, to those who said I shouldn't keep track of such minor stuff like these tear-downs, well I don't see it that way. I've seen Joe Moore's campaign contributing developers cut corners way too many times. These guys endanger the community with their lack of safety in demolition and Joe Moore looks the other way.
I wonder if they even got a permit to tear this old house down? And I'd like to know the cost all this police and fire personal is going to cost us tax-payers? Let's talk about that Joe Moore.
Remember Mr. Coe?
Update #1: Towing has been called in to remove the cars parked in front of 1320-22 West Morse. You can smell the gas leak fumes on Lunt now.

Craig, don't let the nay-sayers deter you from doing all you have done, are doing and will do to bring news of the community to the community. No, you don't offer solutions - that's not your job. You report. O.K., your reporting is not exactly unbiased, some reports are a bit opinionated, and your choices may at times be editorialized but the fact is this is your blog and it is thanks to you that any of this news is getting out at all. Would I like to see unbiased coverage? Coverage free of agenda and/or personal opinion? Sure. But it's not happening and in the meantime we need the Broken Heart to keep us informed. Craig, your coverage is necessary and I, for one, deeply appreciate your commitment of time, treasure and talent for the good of the community. Thank you. Sincerely, thank you. Cover what you will in the way you deem best and I'll read it every time. The fact is, the naysayers aren't offering any alternatives anyway.
- PEACE -
I agree with Fargo...keep reporting.
You CAN be opinionated, but you are most often THERE (at the situation), or know others who are.
I want to know about the circumstances of a tear down of a house as much as a shooting because the nature of both leads to a clearer understaning of the neighborhood, and the people who 'govern' it.
Thank you.
I second Fargo Woman.
Keep up the good fight Craig.
wow, i must say, a gas leak is pretty damn serious, especially one that large. i wonder what's going to happen with this one, how it's going to get covered up. wonder where all the JB Albertos drivers parked. wouldn't that be funny, if JBs caused their own business to lose money because they wouldn't pay for a proper demolition.
I agree, a gas leak is serious.
But it's the gas leak, and the way a tear-down is being dealt with generally, that is serious.
I applaud Craig for reporting safety violations committed by contractors. Human lives are at stake here, and contractors in Chicago have been permitted to get away with too much.
What I believe we all get too excited about around here, to the detriment of more important things, is the loss of this or that insignificant SF house.
The fact that a SF house is being torn down by the owner without any imput from us is not important.
That it is being done with no regard for safety, is very important indeed.
I agree with Fargo and others. I definitely wish you'd pull back on the rhetoric sometimes, but your info is a must-read.
I wonder if they even got a permit to tear this old house down?
