* School Bus Crash @ Chase and Sheridan (Update)

Early this morning, a 'Positive Connections' School bus and livery driver in a Caddy crashed into each other at Chase and Sheridan Road. I snapped the photos on my bike ride back from Evanston this morning.

Breaking News - BLOGNOTES: I just got a flash e-mail from Kheris over at the 'Living Room of Rogers Park'. She gives her time-line of the events.

Update: You heard it here in the comments section from Boondock first, but now confirmed by News Affairs. (FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS) One man is dead after a two-vehicle crash reportedly involving a school bus Saturday morning in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side.

Preliminary reports state the man was driving south on North Sheridan Road near West Chase Avenue when he crossed the center line and struck a bus driving the opposite direction about 6 a.m., police News Affairs Officer John Henry.

The crash happened in the 1300 block of West Chase. The male driver of the vehicle died following the crash, Henry said. A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death, but the man’s identity was not being released Saturday morning.

A witness said the crash was between a school bus and a Cadillac sedan. No other injuries were reported, and it is unknown if any passengers were on the bus, Henry said. Investigators from the police Major Accident Investigation Unit remain on the scene as of 11 a.m., according to a MAIU officer.

Driving way too fast down Sheridan Road in the early morning hours is becoming all too common of a problem.

Accident, June '07, one dead.

Accident, August '07, no fatalities.

Thx Craig, and very surprised to read the driver of the Caddy was pronounced dead on the scene. I distinctly saw him being wheeled away from the car, on a stretcher with an oxygen mask on. I thought he was alive, but probably severely injured. He had to have been going pretty fast for the vehicles to wind up in the positions they were in when I got there.

The driver of the Cadillac, Baldwin Ofori-Atta, 37, of the 8500 block of West Catalpa Avenue, was extricated from the wreckage and pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston at 7:21 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

He was heading south and traveling at a high rate of speed.

This was obviously Joe Moore's fault.

How many people have to be killed on that death-trap of a street for traffic-calming to be implemented?

This makes how many fatal accidents on Sheridan Rd in the past 6 months? Help me out here because I've lost count.

Lowering the speed limit strongly suggests itself. This should be a 25 MPH street, because of the number of intersections- often people are driving too fast to stop at the line when the light changes, thus greatly endangering the pedestrian traffic that crosses on the walk light.

Also, this is a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood, and awareness of pedestrian safety should be a prime consieration in regulating traffic along this dangerous street.

I would agree with you Laura that Sheridan is a pedestrian nightmare. Don't want to be too negative to consider a fix, but I am not sure that dropping the speed limit would be effective, unless it was rigorously enforced.

Much like the Ridge feeder into LSD, Sheridan caters to the Lake Shore Drive traffic. They are too intent on getting on an expressway and are going "hell bent for leather" to get there.

I doubt seriously that they are obeying the speed limit now, nor do they respect a pedestrians right to cross on the green. If I had a penny for everytime someone turned into me and the pups, when we were clearly crossing legally, I could retire comfortably.

Another gripe...has anyone noticed that people think it is OK to leave their car in idle, blocking a lane of traffic, while they run into Sonny's or the White Hen? I see this all the time and rarely see squad cars stopping to address this issue. Just curious.
