* Cobblers Mall Under Gang Rule - UPDATED - It's Fixed

Not the first time the 'Broken Heart' had to help this building remove the tags.

The now vacant Cobblers Mall at 1328-32 West Morse Avenue, (Morse Avenue and Wayne Street, aka - Murder World) has fallen into the hands of the local choir boys. One of the new owners has known about it for a while now. My guess is he doesn't want or doesn't have the ability to remove the tags.

The property was built about 100 years ago as the Morse Theater and was originally used for silent films and vaudeville.?

It also housed a family shoe repair business.

Then the building was bought by a Special Service Area tax #24 commissioner Maryann Carrero. A rubber stamp commissioner who profited by being a specially selected commissioner. She then rented out a space to DevCorp North, the sole serve provider for Special Service Area tax 19 and 24.

As quick as Maryann bought the building, she sold it.

Now it stands as a another vacant building on the street the locals call the "hell-hole." A building the neighborhood choir boys have marked as theirs. Anyone can see from the above photograph. It seems like a matter of time before this building becomes another boarded up wasteland on Morse. First the graffiti, then the plywood, then the crumbling bricks. Soon it will be like the Coe hole.

I asked and I gave the one of the owners plenty of time to have this graffiti removed. After-all, one of the principles in the new 1328-32 West Morse Avenue project, Andy McGee, has close ties to that so-called 'Mr. Fix it' who's running for Alderman.

Being a good Alderman requires doing the little things fast. Like getting gang graffiti removal. This is a basic 'quality of life' issue. O.K., it's more serious than that. It's a crime (gangs, guns and drugs) issue too.

This was the 'other guys' chance to shine. After all the blunders he's been making lately. He could have helped his supporter and done a good thing for the neighborhood - all in one motion.

But as of today, it looks like he couldn't do it. It just hasn't happened.

Can't Wait Anymore:

Even though it's not my building, I took the matter in my own hands. Instead of asking the building owner, again, (which didn't work) I made a contact with Matt Smith at the downtown Streets and Sanitation Department yesterday. I was told by Mr. Smith this gang graffiti removal will take place real quickly. Maybe as soon as this weekend. Let's hope the second times a charm.

Blognotes: I'm heading up to Baraboo Hiils for a motorcycle event this weekend. This involves competition and physical exertion. Plus, a little skill and a little luck. I know, this stinks of athletics, but, the leaves on the trees are changing into their fall colors, this should not only be a "physical exertion" weekend, it will be a very scenic weekend also. Of course, I'll take some photographs.

If you're bored, I've included a few past graffiti and graffiti removal stories below. There's lot's more than these four. You just have to dig through the archives.

Hi Craig:

"So you know, we completed that gang graffiti removal this morning. Thanks for the heads up and have a fun weekend."

Getting this stuff removed is a simple call to graffitti blasters at 311. Anyone can do it, and should do it asap. The sooner the better!

CAR8934worthless.

We feel your pain! We live on Lakewood and get woken up at 2am also. One night a few weeks ago, my boyfriend went out into the alley and saw the offending screaming woman and what did he see right beside her? A POLICE CAR.

I wish he had got the number because it probably was the same car. Maybe I'll write the Alderman a letter too- this is ridiculous.

I hope you don't move. We need good people around here that will call police. We run a fan all year long to drown out any noise.

Ah, now you're starting to cach on. You live in an area designated for lack of inforcement of drug dealing and drug use. Helps with the stats elsewhere. Sorry you didn't know that when you bought in. You should have asked around.

In the past we have detained offenders until the authorities arrive. Beprepared to be commendated and sued for such actions. Sleep deprevation CAR8934WORTHLESS is no joke and it can ruin your life in ways you may not percieve.
Do not go out alone get my cell from Craig and call me. First I will video any confrontations to publish here.
Often just raising awareness motivates others.

In not unrelated news SSA #24 Morse-Glenwood-Clark had their one & only public hearing on their 2007 property tax levy & budget this afternoon. You guys jnew about that, right? Only person showing to testify was Kimberly Bares, who draws her salary from the SSA property tax levy. She submitted written testimony but I'm gonna guess it was in favor. The property tax levy and budget was passed unanimously today, without discussion, by the Finance Committee and will no doubt be approved by the full City Council next Wed.

I do not have a problem taking things in my own hands. It is my girlfriend that gets a little worried about my safety. I do not want to move and was well aware in what I was getting into. I just wish the police would have some respect for themselves and do their job. I pay their salary. The building next to mine is becoming a real problem. Jocelyn, I know you guys deal with the same thing. I just wish I new what else we can do... I have spoken to the man that sits out in the front of the building on Sundays. He is the manager, I believe. That does not work. I know that the caps meetings do not work. Kevin O'neil does not do shit about complaints. I also know that the Alderman will just ignore my email, just as he ignores everything else. I wish I would have confronted the cop this morning. I do have video of the incident but that will not do anything either. WHAT DO WE DO NEXT?

Jordan perhaps you can go to one of the TV stations, show the tape, tell your story. It is soon election time, if for no other reason then trying to get votes to stay our alderman, joe will do something, o'neil might get his head out of joe's ass, lets face it kevin o'neil has no respect from the officers in the 24th, nor should he get it. By going to the locl news station we might even get a new alderman. A new alderman might make things alittle better, let's face it he can't make much worse!! Good luck!!

Screamers and Whiners..............it's a big and raucus city out there folks.

So you call the cops and say "someone is screaming" in my alley. They say "when you say screaming, do you mean there is people fighting or an altercation of some sort" No just someone screaming and keeping me awake. They call next available car and have a little chuckle about a screamer..........

Come on...........they get these calls all the time. What exactly do you expect them to do?

Throw all the screamers in jail??

Sheesh

I'd never call the cops just because someone is screaming in an alley. You are overloading an already overloaded system taking too many calls from too many whiners who wan't the neighborhood to be magically what it is not, the day after they move into their new condo.

Too funny

Water Balloons!
We used them to drive Idiots from another location in RP a score ago.
Surgical tubing a funnel and some basic physics and you have a scumbag deterant system. Yes you can clear a 3 flat with such a device.
Also fun at field events on hot days.

You live in RP! Get used to it!

The Rogers Park Builders Group official recommends current residents lower their expections to meet existing conditions.

More arrests just lower property values. Please stop calling.

Craig, I clicked on the link you posted with this story that said aka Murder World. The website is chicagogangs.org. I find it amazing that the last 2 sentences under "history" say, "The Braziers have never been that large in number and have declined over the years. They mainly only operate on the corner of Morse and Wayne." If this so well known (and I drive by there every day and see it) then WHY, WHY, WHY is it tolerated?

Hi Hue,

I am not and never was a member of The Rogers Park Builders Group.

Cute effort though.

Hugh said...

> WHY is it tolerated?

Simple.

Criminals are not idiots. If you selectively enforce crime by area, they figure it out. So by tolerating crime in areas where residents call in less frequently, you reduce call & arrest stats overall. It's the numbers game in action. It's an unintended consequnce of our "management by objective" of our police.

Any questions?
