Chicago Tribune - A man was killed Saturday evening in a drive-by shooting in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said.
The shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of West Estes Avenue after Agustine Esteban, 20, quarreled with two men, Chicago Police Officer Tom Polick said.
"Sometime later, these two individuals drove past in a vehicle ... and fired multiple times at the victim," Polick said.
Esteban of the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue in Evanston was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 6:30 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

I am seriously thinking about leaving this shit hole neighborhood with its shit headed leadership. This blog has made far more aware of the goings on here than is good for my psyche.
Someone wrote recently that Edgewater was just as bad 10 years ago, but now is amongst the safest nabs in the City. F*ck JoMo. His focus on the WRONG things is a major reason that this nab continues to languish as a shit hole.
I'm the one that wrote about Edgewater's incredible improvement in the past 10 years, while it was worse than RP in '97, as was Uptown as well.
My personal experience is that the south end of RP has improved dramatically and is very good. I live on Pratt, which is a perfect street, and from Farwell on South, and east of the el tracks, there are very few problems. Such was not the case 10 years ago.
Edgewater is now my idea of a perfect nabe. It is still pretty affordable, has a big selection of well-run low-income buildings, great retail, and friendly, safe streets. Lots of nice rentals for reasonable rents.
The north end of Rogers Park, for reasons I believe are political, continues to be intractable. Too bad, really. Jarvis looks 1000% better than it used to. But there are still too many social services for problem populations and still too many really badly run low-income buildings owned by contributors to our AlderCretin's campaign coffers. I don't expect things to change while he's in office.
Maybe Evanston needs to start putting more pressure on Moore to clean up the north part of his ward. It is clear that the problems in north Rogers Park are bleeding over into south Evanston. Gangs, drugs, and guns -- oh my.
"RP problems bleeding over into South Evanston" - This is not a new situation. Those of you who have been around here for a while may remember the situation several years ago when Evanston Alderman Ann Rainey got caught in gang crossfire at the intersection of Howard and Damen while waiting for a red light. This was a big factor in the Evanston Police getting their outpost on Howard St. and developing a more cooperative relationship with CPD 24th district.
Fast forward a bit....now more of the problems have been pushed a block or two away, both into Evanston and into Chicago, especially around Birchwood/Hoyne. IMO, the blue light cameras have driven a lot of action towards Birchwood & Hoyne. Condo buyers in that area tend not to realize what they're getting into until they hear the gunfire at night and see all the action on the street.
There's nothing that beats doing some basic research on a neighborhood before you buy.
...and you really don't know what a place is like until you are in it at night, especially summer nights. Just hang out for a while on any warm Fri or Sat night.
i live here too, you are correct in your thought. I lived in RP for 5yrs,I was looking to buy a condo in RP, rented in the neighborhood (recomend eveyone try to rent in a neighborhood before buying) two things happened, 1.)I saw what was going on in the streets, 2.) I came upon The Broken Heart" site.
When it came time to buy, I bought in Edgewater (joey is still my aldermen) the north coast hits the nail right on the head Edgewater is better (all you haters, keep your teeth on your tongues)- joey is makeing RP the shit hole it is. RP is a beautiful neighborhood!!
The fact is when you see the crap going on ( check this site for the shootings, gang problems) in RP it is very sad ! Seeing that summer is just starting, school isn't out yet, I hope I'm wrong but the color red (as in blood) will be marking the streets in areas around Pottawattomie Park, Howard, Clark, & the area from Birchwood, Hoyne & Winchester.
Remember joey says "Crime is down in Rogers Park"
It IS sad, Ryne, because RP is an intrinsically loveable place that has all the ingredients of a great neighborhood. There are thousands of great people. The architecture is wonderful. The place is densely forested with mature trees, and the people here are so into gardening and art.
It's too bad our alderman, in tandem with the city's leadership, decided that this pretty nabe with tolerant, easy-going people would make an ideal dumping ground for the dregs from the housing projects who could not be placed anywhere else. The people with problems like criminal records and drug habits and too many babies on welfare. It's not because they're poor- Edgewater is full of economically marginal people, and is ethnically very diversified, and so are other neighborhoods that don't have the problems we have. Poverty and low wages are not the problems, and neither are race and ethnicity.
The problem is an alderman who is the toadie of a city government wanting a convenient dumping ground for the unplaceable dregs and his owners, the slumlords who make so much money from the government housing programs for operating slum buildings.
You must always ask: who profits, and why?
