Why doesn't the Principal at Sullivan do something about the fighs a his school? Doesn't the LSC care about what a bad name this gives Sullivan? The principal was pu there to improve the school. What does he need to prevent this daily combat zone?

"Why doesn't the Principal at Sullivan do something about the at his school??"

The thing of it is, these fights aren't happening inside of the school. Actually, there have been very few fights inside of the school so far this school year - unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Pratt, Ashland, or the Howard area. Legally, there's not much that the principal or others can do if it's not actually happening on school grounds.

This situation seems like when the media reports a CPS student getting shot or killed - it didn't happen inside of the school, it just so happened that it was a CPS student. Don't get me wrong - some of these people fighting are definitely students from Sullivan - but there are also many people that are either former students (aka dropouts and others that were kicked out) or just assorted scum.

It would be nice if someone could figure out a solution to this problem - but it seems like all that gets put up on this blog are complaints. As was suggested on another post, throwing everyone in jail hasn't been working - but there's got to be some other way.

we can't train irresponsible parents so we must find other alternatives. Here are three:
1) I know this has been tried before, ,but we can refine it and try again: Active neighborhood watch with patrols. Not vigaltes, but a show of citizens force.

2) Petitions to Joe more and the Commander of the 24th district to put more foot patrol officers in the hot spots.

3) Flood Mayor Daily's office with letters, ,not email, demanding better protection for the citizens of Rogers Park. Include an editorial in the Trib.

I know much of this has been tried before, but that is now excuse to give up.

Come on people . . . .fighting and hazing is how poorly educated, barely literate Af-Am teens from low-income, one-parent households relate to each other. This is not a prejudiced remark, it is an accurate observation. They were doing it when I was in high school during the 1970s and before that.

There was a report on WBEZ the other days about a similar problem near a Chicago high school at 79th and Racine. The school district hired a couple of black military veterans to hang out near the school to monitor and help diffuse all this jungle behavior I referred to above. They claim to have reduced such incidents from a few times a week to one or two incidents every several weeks. Maybe they need to hire a couple of older black men to do the same near Sullivan.

BillyJoe, I'm African-American, and I graduated from high school in 1979. Oh, and I come out of a one-parent home (due to my parent's divorce in 1969). The kids I attended school with weren't all saints, but they were no where as bad as a lot of these kids now.

Know why? Most of our parents, even the single ones, weren't taking much crap off of us. We were getting our asses kicked at home, given discipline and being taught respect. The majority of our parents weren't clueless teenagers who had us out of wedlock. They were over 21 and married when we were born.

The same can't be said for today's generation of teens, regardless of race. Parents who have no childrearing skills, school administrators who have their hands tied behind their backs, and a social service system as well as an overly child-centric society that excuses egregious behavior out of youths all add up to problems.

Boxing Tomboy, I think you are in denial.

I realize that not all Af-Am kids are rowdy to the point of assault, but many of them are guilty of the obnoxious behavior described in this post. And it's no different than what I witnessed as a teen in the 70s.

In someways, one could argue that they're overcompensating for their insecurity and anger regarding their position in life. And when people--especially white people--recoil at their behavior, it just makes them act even more angry, rowdy, and emboldened.

I'm living in denial, billyjoe? I have no doubt that someone applied the labels "angry", "insecure" and "having no future to me" simply because I came out of some dicey west side neighborhoods (including the projects). It's just that I know stereotypes don't apply to everyone.
